New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre held restricted and delegation-level talks in Oslo. The two leaders agreed to elevate India-Norway relations to a Green Strategic Partnership, marking a significant milestone in enhancing cooperation in the fields of clean energy, blue economy and green transition.
During the talks, the leaders reviewed the entire spectrum of bilateral relations and agreed to further strengthen cooperation in areas including trade and investment, blue economy, circular economy, renewable energy, education, science and technology, artificial intelligence, space and the Arctic region. Both leaders also noted the vast opportunities arising from the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, particularly in trade, technology collaboration and job creation.
Following the talks, the two leaders issued a joint press statement. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recalled that he was scheduled to visit Norway last year, but the visit had to be postponed due to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam. He thanked Norway for standing firmly with India against terrorism during that difficult period and described it as a reflection of true friendship.
Prime Minister Modi said the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, which came into effect last year, serves as a blueprint for shared progress and prosperity between India and Norway. The Prime Minister also welcomed Norway’s decision to join the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative. He said that as two major maritime nations, India and Norway will further strengthen cooperation in marine economy, maritime security and capacity building.
Mr Modi said that both India and Norway believe in a rules-based international order, dialogue and diplomacy. He noted that no issue can be resolved through military conflict alone. Referring to the situations in Ukraine and West Asia, he said both countries support all efforts aimed at early restoration of peace.
Mr Modi also emphasized that reform of global institutions is essential to address emerging global challenges. He said India and Norway share a strong commitment to eliminate terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.
The two Prime Ministers also exchanged views on regional and global issues. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre conveyed strong support for India’s and the global fight against terrorism. The leaders also agreed to enhance cooperation in multilateral fora.
