NEW DELHI : Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his greetings to citizens on the occasion of World Environment Day and called for renewed commitment towards environmental protection and sustainable development.

In a message shared on social media platform X on Friday, the Prime Minister praised individuals and organisations working towards environmental conservation and highlighted India’s progress in areas such as increasing green cover and wildlife protection.

PM Modi Calls for Greater Commitment to Sustainability
Marking World Environment Day, Prime Minister Modi emphasised the importance of protecting natural resources and promoting sustainable growth. He said the occasion serves as an opportunity to reaffirm collective responsibility towards preserving the environment for future generations.

The Prime Minister also acknowledged the efforts of citizens, environmental groups and stakeholders who have been actively involved in conservation initiatives across the country.

According to Modi, India’s environmental achievements over the past decade demonstrate how public participation, scientific innovation and policy interventions can contribute to positive environmental outcomes.

Government Highlights Progress in Conservation
In his message, the Prime Minister pointed to several environmental initiatives undertaken during the last decade. He said India has witnessed an expansion of green cover and improvements in wildlife conservation, leading to growth in the populations of several animal species.

He credited these developments to coordinated efforts involving government policies, technological innovation and public participation. The Prime Minister noted that environmental protection and economic growth can progress together when sustainability remains a core policy objective.

Significance of World Environment Day
Observed every year on June 5, World Environment Day is one of the most widely recognised international events dedicated to environmental awareness and action. The annual observance encourages governments, businesses, communities and individuals to take steps aimed at protecting the planet and addressing pressing ecological challenges.

The initiative is led by the United Nations Environment Programme and has evolved into a major global platform for environmental advocacy and public engagement.

Origins of the Global Observance
World Environment Day traces its origins to the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, held in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1972. The conference marked a significant moment in global environmental governance by bringing environmental issues into mainstream international policymaking.

Following the conference, the United Nations designated June 5 as World Environment Day, with the first official observance taking place in 1973.

Since then, the annual event has grown into a worldwide movement involving participation from more than 150 countries.

Focus on Climate Change and Environmental Challenges
The occasion also draws attention to some of the most pressing environmental concerns facing the world today, including climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss and the depletion of natural resources.

Governments and environmental organisations use the day to launch awareness campaigns, policy initiatives and conservation programmes. Activities such as tree plantation drives, clean-up campaigns, educational programmes and community outreach events are organised across countries to promote environmental responsibility.

Individual Actions Remain Important
While large-scale policy measures play a crucial role in environmental protection, experts continue to stress the importance of individual action. Simple steps such as reducing waste, conserving water, using public transportation, minimising plastic consumption and planting trees can contribute significantly to environmental sustainability.
