NEW DELHI : Krishna Chhathi, also known as Laddu Gopal Chhathi, is celebrated after Janmashtami to mark the sixth-day ceremony associated with the birth of Lord Krishna. Just as Chhathi is traditionally observed for a newborn child, devotees celebrate the occasion for Bal Gopal with special puja, shringar, bhog and devotional songs. In 2026, Krishna Janmashtami was observed on September 4. According to the commonly followed counting tradition, Krishna Chhathi will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. Some traditions may follow a different method of counting the sixth day, so devotees can follow their family tradition or local panchang.

When Is Krishna Chhathi 2026?
Krishna Chhathi 2026 will be observed on September 9, Wednesday. The festival is traditionally associated with the sixth day after the birth of a child. Since Janmashtami was celebrated on September 4 this year, devotees will observe Bal Krishna’s Chhathi on September 9 according to the customary calculation followed by many households. The date can sometimes cause confusion because some people count Janmashtami as the first day, while the traditional Chhathi calculation observes the ceremony after six days. Therefore, families may follow their own established religious tradition.

What Is The Significance Of Krishna Chhathi?
Krishna Chhathi is linked to the traditions surrounding the birth of a newborn. Devotees symbolically treat Bal Krishna as a newborn child and celebrate his sixth-day ceremony with affection and devotion. The occasion also gives devotees an opportunity to worship Krishna in his child form. In temples and homes, Bal Gopal is given a special place, dressed in new clothes and offered festive food.

Krishna Chhathi Puja Rituals
On Krishna Chhathi, devotees generally begin the day by cleaning the puja area and preparing the idol of Laddu Gopal. The deity may be given a ceremonial bath with Panchamrit and water before being dressed in new clothes. The idol is then decorated with ornaments, a crown and other traditional shringar items. Devotees offer flowers, incense and bhog before performing the aarti. Bhajan-kirtan and devotional songs are also an important part of the celebration, particularly in Krishna temples and households that observe the festival with a larger gathering.

What Bhog Is Offered On Krishna Chhathi?
Kadhi-chawal is considered an important traditional bhog for Krishna Chhathi in many regions. Along with this, devotees may offer makhan-mishri, peda, malpua, fruits and Panchamrit. Regional and family traditions can vary. While preparing bhog, devotees generally avoid onion and garlic and prepare sattvik food for the offering.

How Is Krishna Chhathi Celebrated In Braj?
The celebration has special significance in the Braj region, including Mathura, Vrindavan and Gokul, which are closely associated with Lord Krishna’s childhood. Temples may organise special shringar of Bal Gopal, devotional programmes and festive decorations. Jhankis depicting Krishna’s childhood and his Bal Leelas can also form part of the celebrations. Devotees participate in bhajan-kirtan and offer traditional bhog while celebrating Krishna in his beloved child form.

Krishna Chhathi And Janmashtami: What’s The Difference?
Janmashtami celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna and is observed on the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha. Krishna Chhathi, on the other hand, is a subsequent celebration associated with the sixth day after his birth. Janmashtami traditionally involves fasting, midnight worship and the celebration of Krishna’s birth, while Chhathi focuses more on Bal Gopal’s sixth-day ceremony, special shringar and festive bhog.

Why Is Chhathi Considered Special?
The ceremony reflects the wider Indian tradition of celebrating important milestones in a newborn child’s early days. By observing Krishna Chhathi, devotees express their affection and devotion towards Bal Gopal and celebrate his childhood form. For devotees, the festival is less about elaborate rituals and more about celebrating Krishna with faith, devotion and the warmth associated with welcoming a child into the family. Krishna Chhathi is a continuation of the festive spirit of Janmashtami, bringing the focus from Krishna’s birth to his beloved Bal Swaroop. In 2026, devotees following the commonly observed calculation will celebrate the occasion on September 9. Special shringar, aarti, bhajan-kirtan and traditional bhog such as kadhi-chawal make the day an important part of Krishna worship.
