New Delhi: Purnima vrat holds a special place in Hindu tradition and is observed on the full moon day of the Shukla Paksha every month. The vrat is traditionally begun with the Purnima of Margashirsha, Magha or Vaishakha, while its udyapan, or concluding ritual, is performed on the Purnima of Bhadrapada and Pausha.

Among these observances is Battisi Purnima vrat, also known as Dvatrinshi Purnima vrat. It is considered a special and fruitful ritual and is believed to bring happiness, prosperity and blessings of children and grandchildren. The vrat is observed across 32 consecutive Purnima tithis, taking around two years and eight months to complete. Here is when the Sawan Purnima vrat will be observed in 2026.

Sawan Purnima vrat 2026 date
The Purnima tithi of Sawan will begin at 9:08 am on August 27 and end at 9:48 am on August 28. When the Purnima tithi falls across two days, the Purnima vrat is observed on the first day, while the following day is associated with snan-daan and the related religious observances.

The vrat is observed on the day when the full moon rises completely. Based on this, the Sawan Purnima vrat will be observed on August 27, 2026, while Sawan Purnima for snan-daan will be observed on August 28.

Sawan Purnima 2026 moonrise time
Moonrise on the day of the Sawan Purnima vrat is expected at 6:34 pm. On Purnima, the Moon is believed to appear in its complete form, and religious traditions attach particular significance to worshipping Chandra Dev when the full Moon is visible in the sky.

Significance of Purnima vrat
Purnima vrat includes the worship of Chandra Dev as well as Lord Vishnu. Observing the vrat is believed to help devotees attain freedom from sins committed unknowingly and receive auspicious spiritual benefits.

The significance of Purnima vrat is mentioned in several religious texts, including the Skanda Purana, Padma Purana, Narada Purana, Bhavishya Purana and the Mahabharata.

When will Sawan Purnima vrat paran take place?
Purnima vrat is generally concluded in the evening after offering arghya to the Moon. Accordingly, those observing the Sawan Purnima vrat should perform the paran after moonrise and after offering arghya to Chandra Dev.

If possible, devotees can also donate according to their capacity to a Brahmin before performing the paran.
