NEW DELHI : The government has extended the deadline for filing appeals before the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) to July 31, 2026, providing taxpayers an additional month to submit their cases.
The decision was announced by the Ministry of Finance on Monday through a notification issued under Section 112(1) read with Section 112(3) of the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Act. Earlier, the last date for filing appeals before the tribunal, as notified on September 17, 2025, was June 30, 2026.
According to the government, the extension was granted following representations from taxpayers and industry stakeholders, who highlighted technical difficulties on the GSTAT portal due to a surge in filings close to the deadline.
The government said that nearly 30,000 appeals were filed in the last 15 days, with the portal handling peak daily volumes of around 5,500 appeals. Taxpayers have been advised to file their appeals well before the revised deadline instead of waiting until the last moment.
Commenting on the extension, Abhishek Jain, Indirect Tax Head & Partner at KPMG, said, “A one-month extension for filing appeals before the GSTAT is a welcome and much-needed relief. It will provide taxpayers and professionals adequate time to adapt to the newly operational Tribunal, ensure that genuine appeals are not lost on limitation, and support a smooth transition to the GSTAT framework.”
The extension is expected to ease pressure on the GSTAT portal while giving taxpayers additional time to complete their appeal filing process without facing technical disruptions.
