New Delhi: For many people trying to lose weight, the morning debate is simple: should the day begin with a cup of black coffee or green tea? Both are low-calorie choices when consumed without sugar, milk, cream or flavoured syrups, and both contain caffeine and plant compounds that may influence metabolism. But does one actually help shed more kilos?

According to Dr Jatin Kumar Majhi, Associate Consultant – Endocrinology, Manipal Hospital, Bhubaneswar, green tea may have a slight advantage based on current evidence, although the effect is small and should not be mistaken for a shortcut to weight loss.

Green tea vs coffee: What does the research say
A 2024 systematic review and network meta-analysis of 22 randomised controlled trials involving 1,710 adults compared different types of tea and coffee for their effect on body weight. Researchers found that green tea was associated with a small reduction in weight compared with placebo or water. However, the researchers rated the certainty of this evidence as low to very low, and most of the studies were relatively short, with an average duration of around 10 weeks. Coffee did not show a significant weight-loss effect in that analysis.

Another recent systematic review of randomised trials found that green tea supplementation was associated with modest reductions in body weight, BMI, waist circumference and body-fat percentage. Again, the size of the effect was relatively small.

“Green tea may have a slight advantage when it comes to weight loss because it contains both catechins, particularly EGCG, and caffeine. But the benefit is modest, and green tea should not be viewed as a weight-loss treatment on its own,” says Dr Majhi.

Why does green tea get an edge
Green tea contains naturally occurring catechins, including epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), along with caffeine. Research suggests that the combination may have a modest effect on body weight and fat metabolism. Earlier meta-analyses have also reported small reductions in weight and BMI when green-tea catechins are consumed with caffeine, although the researchers described the clinical significance as modest.

This is important because the word “fat-burning” can make the effect sound much larger than it actually is. Green tea may contribute to a small change over time, but it is unlikely to produce substantial weight loss by itself.

What about black coffee
Black coffee generally contains considerably more caffeine than green tea. An 8-ounce cup of brewed coffee contains roughly 95 mg of caffeine, while the same amount of green tea contains around 28 mg, although actual amounts vary depending on preparation and serving size.

Caffeine can temporarily increase alertness and influence energy expenditure and fat oxidation. More importantly for people who exercise, research has found that caffeine can improve several aspects of physical performance, including endurance and muscular performance, although the response varies from person to person.

“Because black coffee generally provides a higher dose of caffeine, it may be more useful around exercise for people who tolerate caffeine well. The advantage here is more about alertness and exercise performance than about coffee directly causing significant weight loss,” Dr Majhi explains.

Regular caffeine consumption can also lead to tolerance, meaning the effects may become less noticeable over time. Individual response varies considerably.

The real weight-loss trap may be what you add to the cup
Whether you choose coffee or tea, the calorie difference between the two beverages becomes much less important if the cup is loaded with sugar, cream, flavoured syrups or condensed milk.

Plain black coffee and unsweetened green tea are both very low in calories. Replacing a sugar-sweetened beverage with either can therefore be a useful step for someone trying to reduce overall calorie intake.

“The beverage itself is only one small part of the picture. If you add sugar, cream, syrups or condensed milk, you can turn an otherwise low-calorie drink into a significant source of extra calories.” says Dr Majhi.

How much caffeine is too much
For most healthy adults, the US Food and Drug Administration considers up to 400 mg of caffeine a day an amount not generally associated with negative effects. However, caffeine sensitivity varies, and some people can experience anxiety, palpitations, restlessness or sleep problems at much lower amounts.

Timing matters too. A controlled sleep study found that consuming 400 mg of caffeine even six hours before bedtime could significantly disrupt sleep. People who are sensitive to caffeine may therefore want to avoid coffee and other caffeinated drinks later in the day.

Those with certain medical conditions, those taking particular medicines, and pregnant or breastfeeding women should discuss appropriate caffeine intake with their healthcare provider.

So, which is better for weight loss
If the question is strictly about the current evidence, green tea has a slight edge. But the difference is small, and the available research does not support treating either beverage as a powerful weight-loss aid.

Black coffee may be the better choice for someone seeking a stronger caffeine effect before exercise, while green tea may suit someone who prefers a milder caffeine dose along with tea catechins.

Ultimately, the most effective choice is the one you can drink unsweetened, tolerate well and enjoy consistently.

As Dr Majhi puts it, “For sustainable weight loss, the focus should remain on a healthy, calorie-controlled diet, regular physical activity, adequate sleep and consistency. Choosing green tea over coffee can make only a small difference compared with those bigger lifestyle factors.”
