New Delhi: However, the vrat of Hartalika Teej does not only involve fasting, but there are other rituals too that need to be followed. On this day, married women pray to Lord Shiva and goddess Parvati and seek happiness and blessings in their marriage life. As per religious beliefs, some errors committed by people in the vrat might hamper its sanctity.
If you are planning to observe Hartalika Teej this year, then here are some traditional customs which must be kept in mind.
Do not wear black
As per traditional beliefs, married women are not supposed to wear black clothes or black bangles on this day. Red, green and yellow are considered preferable for worship and adornment, as these colours are traditionally associated with marital bliss and auspiciousness.
Stay away from arguments and anger
Maintaining peace of mind is considered important while observing the fast. Devotees are traditionally advised to avoid arguments and anger with their husband, family members or others. Instead, the day is meant to be spent in devotion, meditation and positive thoughts.
Avoid sleeping during the day
Hartalika Teej is considered different from several other fasts. According to tradition, devotees observing the vrat should avoid sleeping during the day. Instead, the time can be spent remembering Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, singing hymns and chanting mantras.
Staying awake at night is also considered part of the traditional observance.
Do not take the vrat lightly
According to belief, once a woman begins observing the Hartalika Teej fast, it is customary to continue observing it every year. The vrat is therefore considered a significant commitment.
At the same time, physical well-being should be taken into consideration before fasting. If you are unwell, prioritising your health is important.
Begin the puja with Lord Ganesha
Lord Ganesha is traditionally worshipped before Shiva and Parvati during the Hartalika Teej puja. Devotees first remember and worship Ganesha, who is traditionally regarded as the first deity to be worshipped, before proceeding with the worship of Shiva and Parvati.
The puja is performed with prayers for marital happiness and eternal good fortune.
