New Delhi: Fresh flowers are considered one of the most sacred offerings in Hindu worship. Lotus, marigold, jasmine, rose, hibiscus, champa, and aparajita are among the most commonly offered flowers, although the preferred flower often depends on the deity being worshipped.

Flowers have been a part of Hindu rituals for thousands of years. Their beauty, fragrance, and freshness symbolise purity, gratitude, and devotion. While every offering made with a sincere heart is valued, Hindu traditions believe that certain flowers are especially dear to particular deities.

If you’re unsure which flowers to use during your daily puja, this guide explains the most commonly offered flowers and their significance.

Why are flowers offered during Puja
Offering flowers is a simple way to express love and respect towards the divine. Fresh flowers represent purity, positive energy, and the beauty of nature. They also create a peaceful atmosphere that helps devotees focus during prayer and meditation.

In Hindu philosophy, the intention behind the offering is more important than its cost. Even a single fresh flower offered with faith is considered meaningful.

These associations may vary slightly across different regions and family traditions, but they are widely followed in Hindu worship.

Popular flowers and their spiritual meaning
Lotus
The lotus symbolises purity, wisdom, and spiritual awakening. It is one of the most sacred flowers in Hinduism and is commonly offered to Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Vishnu, and Goddess Saraswati.

Marigold
Marigold is known for its bright colour and long-lasting freshness. It represents positivity, devotion, and auspiciousness, making it a popular flower for festivals and daily worship.

Jasmine
Jasmine is valued for its pleasant fragrance and is associated with peace, purity, and devotion. It is frequently offered to Lord Vishnu, Lord Hanuman, and Goddess Lakshmi.

Hibiscus
The vibrant red hibiscus is traditionally offered to Lord Ganesha and Goddess Durga. It symbolises strength, energy, and divine power.

Rose
Roses represent love, respect, and heartfelt devotion. They can be offered during daily prayers and on special religious occasions.

Simple rules for offering flowers
Following a few basic practices can make your daily worship more meaningful.

Always offer fresh and clean flowers.
Choose flowers with a natural fragrance whenever possible.

  • Avoid wilted, dry, or damaged flowers.
  • Wash your hands before preparing flowers for worship.
  • Offer flowers with gratitude and devotion.
  • Remove old flowers respectfully after the puja is complete.
  • These simple traditions help maintain the sanctity of the place of worship.

Flowers traditionally avoided in certain pujas
Some flowers are traditionally avoided for specific deities.

For example:

  • Ketaki (Kewda) flowers are generally not offered to Lord Shiva.
  • Tulsi leaves are usually not offered to Lord Ganesha.
  • Artificial or stale flowers are avoided in most forms of worship.

These customs may differ depending on regional traditions, so many families continue to follow practices passed down through generations.

Does colour of the flower matter
Yes. In Hindu traditions, different colours carry different meanings.

  • White symbolises purity and peace.
  • Red represents strength, devotion, and energy.
  • Yellow signifies knowledge, prosperity, and wisdom.
  • Pink reflects love and compassion.
  • Orange symbolises enthusiasm and spiritual energy.

Many devotees choose flower colours according to the deity they are worshipping or the occasion being celebrated.

Flowers are much more than decorative offerings in Hindu worship. They represent devotion, gratitude, and the beauty of surrender. Whether you offer a lotus to Goddess Lakshmi, hibiscus to Lord Ganesha, or jasmine to Lord Vishnu, the true significance lies in the sincerity of your prayer.

Choosing fresh flowers and offering them with faith can make daily worship feel more peaceful and meaningful. Ultimately, Hindu traditions remind us that while every flower has its own symbolism, it is the devotion in the devotee’s heart that makes every offering truly sacred.
