New Delhi: Tulsi, also known as Holy Basil, holds a sacred place in Hindu tradition. Revered as an earthly form of Goddess Tulsi, she is believed to be especially dear to Lord Vishnu. For centuries, devotees have worshipped the Tulsi plant at home to seek happiness, good health, prosperity, and spiritual well-being. It is also believed that regular Tulsi Puja creates a positive atmosphere and brings harmony to the family.

While the rituals may vary from one region to another, the basic Tulsi Puja Vidhi is simple and can be performed by anyone with devotion and sincerity. More than elaborate rituals, it is the faith and intention behind the worship that are considered most important.

Best time to perform Tulsi Puja
Tulsi Puja is commonly performed during the morning after taking a bath. Many devotees also light a lamp near the Tulsi plant in the evening, especially during sunset. Thursdays, Ekadashi, Kartik month, and Tulsi Vivah are regarded as especially auspicious for offering prayers to Goddess Tulsi.

Avoid plucking Tulsi leaves after sunset and on days when traditional customs advise against it, unless required for religious purposes.

Tulsi Puja Samagri
Before beginning the puja, keep the following items ready:

  • A clean pot or Tulsi Vrindavan
  • Fresh water or Gangajal
  • Kumkum and turmeric
  • Sandalwood paste
  • Flowers
  • Akshat (unbroken rice)
  • Incense sticks
  • Ghee or sesame oil lamp
  • Cotton wicks
  • Seasonal fruits or homemade sweets as prasad

You may also keep a picture or idol of Lord Vishnu or Lord Krishna nearby, as Tulsi worship is closely associated with them.

Tulsi Puja Vidhi at home
Begin by cleaning the area around the Tulsi plant. Sprinkle a little water to purify the space and light a diya and incense sticks.

Offer fresh water or Gangajal at the base of the Tulsi plant. Apply kumkum and turmeric to the pot or Tulsi Vrindavan as a mark of respect. Decorate the plant with flowers if available.

Fold your hands and offer prayers to Goddess Tulsi while remembering Lord Vishnu. Chanting the Tulsi Stotram, Vishnu Sahasranama, or simply repeating “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” with devotion is considered highly auspicious.

After the prayers, perform aarti by gently circling the lit lamp before the Tulsi plant. Many devotees also perform three, five, or seven parikramas around the plant while praying for the well-being of their family.

Finally, offer fruits or sweets as prasad and distribute them among family members.

Spiritual significance of Tulsi worship
According to Hindu beliefs, worshipping Tulsi is believed to remove negativity and attract positive energy into the home. The plant symbolizes purity, devotion, and divine grace. It is also associated with family happiness, peace of mind, and spiritual progress.

Many households begin their day by offering water to Tulsi and lighting a lamp in the evening. These simple daily practices are believed to strengthen faith and create a calm and uplifting environment.

Important things to remember
Tulsi should always be treated with respect. Keep the area around the plant clean and avoid placing footwear nearby. Traditionally, devotees avoid plucking Tulsi leaves after sunset or on Dwadashi, as these days are considered sacred to the Goddess. If leaves are required for worship, they are generally collected in the morning after offering prayers.

Dry or fallen leaves should never be discarded carelessly. Many devotees place them in flowing water, under another sacred plant, or use them respectfully in religious rituals.

Tulsi Puja is a beautiful daily ritual that combines devotion with simplicity. Whether performed every morning or on special occasions, it reminds devotees of the importance of faith, gratitude, and inner purity. By following the Tulsi Puja Vidhi with sincerity and maintaining the sacred plant with care, families seek the blessings of Goddess Tulsi and Lord Vishnu for peace, prosperity, good health, and lasting harmony in their lives.
