Washington. US President Donald Trump, during the G7 summit, has taken an unusually tough stance toward Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, openly criticizing Israeli military action in Lebanon. Trump’s recent statements indicate growing differences between the United States and Israel, especially at a time when Washington is trying to advance peace efforts in the Middle East.
Speaking to journalists, Trump said that “Israel is using more force than necessary in its action against Hezbollah. He said that it is not appropriate to destroy an entire area to target an organization, because a large number of civilians also live there.”
Situation in Lebanon is extremely bad: Trump
Trump also said that “the situation in Lebanon has become extremely bad and the country has been facing instability for a long time.” He described Lebanon as once a country of intellectuals, doctors, lawyers, and academics, and said that the current crisis has seriously damaged its identity.
The US President suggested that “Syria should be given a greater role in dealing with Hezbollah.” Referring to Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, he said that if Israel cannot achieve its security objectives without large-scale military action, then regional solutions should be explored.
Trump once again mentioned US support for Israel, saying that during his tenure the United States took unprecedented steps for Israel. However, he also made it clear that Netanyahu needs to show more responsibility and restraint under the current circumstances.
Differences over Iran deal
Ongoing peace talks between the United States and Iran are also considered a major reason for tension between the two leaders. According to reports, Netanyahu did not show enthusiasm for a possible deal with Iran and reiterated that Iran will not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons as long as he is in office.
Meanwhile, Israeli attacks on Lebanon have further complicated the situation. Iran claimed that the ceasefire in Lebanon was also part of a broader peace agreement, although the United States has not formally confirmed this claim.
Rising tensions in relations
Analysts believe that “Trump’s recent statements indicate that he is dissatisfied with Netanyahu’s military strategy. In particular, he expressed anger over the strikes on Beirut and said that such actions could weaken ongoing diplomatic efforts in the region.”
According to Executive Editor Prakash Mehra’s analysis, Trump believes that “for lasting peace in the Middle East, stability in Lebanon is extremely important. That is why he expects more restraint and responsibility from Israel.”
Direction of US–Israel relations
Trump and Netanyahu have long been considered close allies, but recent developments show that differences are emerging between the two leaders due to changing conditions in the Middle East and shifting US diplomatic priorities. In the coming time, issues related to Iran talks, the situation in Lebanon, and regional security may determine the direction of US–Israel relations.
