New Delhi: A restless night can leave you waking up with tight shoulders, a stiff back or sore legs, making it tempting to blame your mattress, workout or sleeping position. However, inadequate sleep itself can contribute to how the body experiences pain and stiffness. Dr Tarun Lala (PT), Head – Zonal Head South Zone, Head – Neurorehab, Physiotherapy and Rehab Services, BLK Max Hospital, explains how insufficient sleep can affect the nervous system and musculoskeletal recovery.
He also shares simple rehabilitation strategies that can help ease stiffness on days when getting a full night’s sleep is difficult. The focus, he says, should be on gentle movement, mobility, relaxation and adjusting exercise intensity rather than remaining inactive.
How lack of sleep affects muscles
Sleep deprivation can keep the body in a heightened stress state, affecting pain perception and muscle tension. It can also interfere with the body’s normal recovery processes.
“Sleep loss lowers your pain threshold. Routine tightness or minor muscle strains feel sharper and more intense because your brain’s pain-filtering system is working on low power,” Dr Lala explains.
He adds that prolonged nervous system stress can also cause muscles to remain tense, creating a feeling of stiffness even when the muscle itself has not physically shortened.
Deep sleep is also important for tissue recovery, and inadequate rest can slow the body’s ability to recover from everyday muscle stress.
Gentle movement can help
Staying in bed or remaining sedentary may not be the best response to sleep-related stiffness. Dr Lala recommends 15 to 20 minutes of low-intensity activity such as walking, easy cycling or gentle swimming to encourage circulation and movement.
Gentle mobility exercises can also be combined with slow, deep diaphragmatic breathing. Movements such as cat-cow transitions and light thoracic rotations can help reduce muscle guarding and improve mobility.
Use heat before foam rolling
A warm shower or warm compress before gentle foam rolling can make self-massage more comfortable. Heat can help improve tissue flexibility, while light rolling may help ease muscle tension without putting additional stress on sore areas.
Adjust workouts after a poor night’s sleep
Heavy training may not be ideal when sleep-deprived. Reduced alertness and coordination can make demanding exercise more challenging, so Dr Lala recommends scaling down the intensity.
Instead of heavy weightlifting, focus on technique, mobility or lighter exercises until the body has recovered adequately.
A poor night’s sleep does not have to mean a day of complete inactivity. Gentle movement, mobility work and appropriate recovery can help manage stiffness while giving the body time to catch up on rest.
