New Delhi: Every year during the holy month of Sawan or Shravan, millions of devotees of Lord Shiva undertake the Kanwar Yatra, one of India’s largest annual pilgrimages. Carrying sacred Ganga water in decorated kanwars, devotees walk for kilometres to offer jalabhishek at Shiva temples, considering the journey an act of devotion and discipline rather than simply a religious procession.

The pilgrimage follows strict spiritual practices, with devotees observing purity, maintaining a sattvic lifestyle and adhering to traditional customs throughout the journey. For those planning to participate for the first time, understanding the dates, different types of kanwar, essential rules and safety precautions can make the experience smoother. Here is everything you need to know about Kanwar Yatra 2026, including important dates, rituals, safety advice and places where devotees can rest and eat free of cost.

All about Kanwar Yatra 2026

Kanwar Yatra 2026 dates
Kanwar Yatra is observed during the month of Sawan, which is expected to begin around July 30, 2026. The pilgrimage reaches its peak on Sawan Shivratri, falling on August 11, 2026, when devotees perform jalabhishek by offering Ganga water to Lord Shiva.

Since the festival follows the Hindu lunar calendar, the dates of Sawan Somwar fasts and Shivratri timings may vary slightly depending on the regional panchang.

Kanwar Yatra meaning
The word kanwar refers to the decorated bamboo pole carried on the shoulders with two sealed pots filled with holy Ganga water.

Devotees collect the sacred water from places such as Haridwar, Gangotri and Gaumukh, before walking back to offer it to a Shivling at their local temple.

The tradition is linked to the belief that Lord Shiva consumed the deadly halahal poison during the Samudra Manthan to save creation. Offering cool Ganga water during Sawan is considered an expression of gratitude and devotion towards Neelkanth Mahadev.

Rules every kanwariya should follow
The pilgrimage is considered a sacred vow, and devotees observe several traditional disciplines throughout the journey.

  • The kanwar should never touch the ground. It should always be placed on a dedicated stand while resting.
  • Follow a strict sattvic vegetarian diet and avoid onion, garlic, alcohol, tobacco and other intoxicants.
  • Bathe before handling the kanwar and maintain personal cleanliness during the yatra.
  • Avoid using leather items while carrying the kanwar.
  • Chant ‘Bol Bam’ and ‘Har Har Mahadev’, while avoiding arguments and negative behaviour.
  • Ensure the sealed pots remain intact and that the Ganga water does not leak before the final offering.
  • Follow the specific rules associated with the type of kanwar you have chosen.

Types of kanwar
Different forms of Kanwar Yatra involve different levels of physical effort and discipline.

Baithi (Saamanya) Kanwar
The most common form of the pilgrimage. Devotees may stop to rest, eat and sleep after placing the kanwar safely on a stand.

Khadi Kanwar
The kanwar is kept upright and continues moving with the support of companions. Long resting breaks are generally avoided.

Dak Kanwar
A more demanding form in which devotees cover the route by running almost continuously, often with assistance from relay teams.

Dandi Kanwar
One of the toughest forms of the pilgrimage. Devotees measure the entire distance through repeated prostrations, making the journey significantly longer.

For first-time pilgrims, the Baithi Kanwar is generally considered the most practical option.

Safety tips for first-time devotees
As the yatra takes place during the monsoon season and covers long distances, a few precautions can help ensure a safer journey.

  • Walk in groups whenever possible.
  • Stay hydrated and eat regularly at authorised sewa camps.
  • Carry a basic first-aid kit to treat blisters and minor injuries.
  • Keep an identity card and emergency contact details with you.
  • Follow traffic instructions issued by police and volunteers.
  • Protect the kanwar and sealed water pots from damage throughout the journey.

For devotees, Kanwar Yatra is not just about reaching a temple but about completing a sacred journey with discipline, devotion and faith while observing every rule dedicated to Lord Shiva.
