NEW DELHI: For many people, the day begins with a warm glass of lemon water. Social media often praises it as a miracle drink that boosts digestion, detoxifies the body, aids weight loss, and improves overall health. But how much of this is actually true? Let’s know from experts.

Why Do People Drink Lemon Water In The Morning?

Dr Dhruv Kant Mishra, Consultant – Gastroenterology & Hepatology at Yatharth Super Speciality Hospital, Faridabad, says one of the biggest advantages of drinking lemon water in the morning is hydration.

After spending several hours asleep without consuming any fluids, the body wakes up mildly dehydrated. A glass of lemon water helps replenish lost fluids and prepares the body for the day ahead.

Dr Shailesh Sahay, Senior Director – Internal Medicine at Max Hospital, Gurugram, agrees that hydration is the primary benefit. Starting the day with lemon water can help restore fluid balance and encourage people to drink more water throughout the day.

Can It Improve Digestion?

Lemon contains citric acid, which may stimulate the production of digestive juices. Dr Mishra notes that this can help prepare the digestive tract to function more efficiently during the day.

Some people also find that warm lemon water helps promote regular bowel movements and may ease bloating or discomfort caused by sluggish digestion.

However, doctors caution that while many people report digestive benefits, scientific evidence supporting lemon water as a treatment for digestive issues remains limited.

Does Lemon Water Boost Immunity?

Lemons contain small amounts of vitamin C and antioxidants, nutrients known for supporting immune function. Dr Sahay notes that these antioxidants may also help protect skin cells from damage and contribute to healthier-looking skin.

While lemon water can add a small nutritional boost to your routine, it should not be considered a substitute for a nutrient-rich diet.

Can It Help With Weight Loss?

Many people turn to lemon water as part of their weight-loss journey. While it doesn’t directly burn fat, it may still support healthier habits.

Dr Sahay explains that replacing sugary drinks, sodas, and high-calorie beverages with lemon water can help reduce overall calorie intake. This simple swap may indirectly support weight-management goals over time.

That said, lemon water itself does not melt fat or speed up metabolism in any significant way.

Does Lemon Water Detox The Body?

One of the most popular claims surrounding lemon water is that it detoxifies the body. Doctors say this is a misconception.

Dr Mishra says that the body’s natural detoxification system is already handled by the liver and kidneys. There is no scientific evidence proving that lemon water flushes toxins out of the body or performs any special cleansing function.

Dr Sahay echoes the same view, emphasising that no drink can replace the body’s natural detoxification mechanisms.

Lemon Water Is Not For Everyone

While lemon water is generally safe for most people, it may not suit everyone.

People with acid reflux, GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease), gastritis, peptic ulcers, or sensitive stomachs may experience discomfort due to the acidic nature of lemons.
