Sachin Malik: Despite restrictions imposed by the Delhi Transport Department under Order No. 18/2013, Sleeper buses are allegedly continuing to operate from Delhi, raising serious concerns over Passenger Safety, regulatory violations and enforcement failures.
At the time of imposing the restriction, the department had reportedly stated that Sleeper buses were unsafe and could become fatal in the event of accidents and therefore Permission for their entry and operation in Delhi could not be Granted.
However, allegations Suggest that a large number of Sleeper buses are Still operating from Kashmere Gate, where extensive Parking arrangements have allegedly been made for these vehicles. Notably, the office of the Delhi Police DCP is located nearby, yet hundreds of buses are reportedly Parked and operated from the area Daily.
Questions are now being raised before the Delhi Traffic Police Commissioner and the Transport Commissioner:
If these Sleeper buses are not authorized to operate in Delhi, then why are such large numbers of buses Parked and operating openly from Kashmere Gate?
According to allegations, these buses travel to several districts of other States, Particularly through Noida and Ghaziabad into different Parts of Uttar Pradesh. It is further alleged that goods transported on the Rooftops of these Sleeper buses are being Moved without Proper GST compliance, Pointing toward Possible tax evasion activities.
Transport regulations Prohibit tourist Permit buses from carrying goods on rooftops or using Passenger buses for commercial freight transportation. Despite these rules, allegations suggest that such activities continue openly.
The report also raises concerns about alleged Protection being Provided by officials from different departments, including traffic Police, transport authorities, GST officials, and regional transport offices. However, these allegations require independent verification and official investigation.
The Government frequently speaks about a “Zero tolerance” Policy against corruption and illegal activities, but questions are being raised over why Strict enforcement is not visible on the ground. Concerns have also been expressed regarding Passenger safety and the Potential risks associated with the continued operation of allegedly unauthorized Sleeper buses.
The issue becomes more Significant in light of the fact that some States, including Rajasthan, have already imposed Strict restrictions on such Sleeper bus operations. Critics are now questioning why similar Strict action is allegedly not being implemented effectively in Delhi.
