Kolkata: The EPFO (Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation) is suspending its portal for three days beginning today. It will be closed from June 26 to June 28, both days included. The portal is the lifeline the organisation that manages and operates India’s primary social security system for salaried employees, guaranteeing retirement savings, pensions and even life insurance.
More than 7 crore active members regularly visit this portal for not only services such as viewing account updates but also taking money out through early claims and withdrawals. Registration of grievances, profile updates and KYC updates are also done through this unified portal. Therefore, a number of EPFO members cannot uswe the portal during this 72-hour window, which coincides with the extended weekend.
Why the portal shutdown?
According to the EPFO, its is carrying out a database consolidation and software upgrade for its claims processing system and the exercise is designed to improve processing efficiency and boost system performance. As a result, the upgrade can only add to the convenience of EPFO members who are waiting for important upgrades such as partial withdrawals through UPI and ATMs.
Services to be restored on June 29
According to the EPFO, the planned shutdown will commence from 12:00 am on June 26, 2026. The services will be suspended till 11:59 pm on June 28, 2026. The authorities have said that the normal services will resume from 00:00 hours on June 29, 2026.
Pending claims will be processed
Despite the planned shutdown of the portal, all due work will be processed normally and there will be no disruption. For example, all claims which have been submitted before the shutdown will proceed as usual. No claim will be declined. Only their processing could be delayed commensurately and the processing will begin as soon as the system is up and running. However, in case of any tearing hurry, EPFO members can use the EPFO call centre number 14470.
Earliest employee welfare scheme
EPF or Employees’ Provident Fund is the earliest employee welfare scheme legislated in India in 1952. It still remains the most potent social security schemes for formal sector employees in India. The scheme is designed to build a corpus of funds through specific and regular contributions from an employee and the employer every month for the post-retirement life of the employee and his/her family members.
Every employee who completes 10 years in service is also entitled to a lifelong monthly pension from EPFO. It is known as EPS of Employee Pension Scheme. EPFO is entrusted with the job of administering the comprehensive scheme and is expanding the ambit of its services and quickly transforming itself from a fuddy-duddy to a digitally-enabled organisation.
