New Delhi: Hindus observe 24 Ekadashis throughout the year, covering both the Krishna Paksha and Shukla Paksha. Tomorrow, Apara Ekadashi fast that is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, will be observed on Wednesday, 13 May 2026. The Parana (breaking of the fast) will take place on 14 May.

Significance of Apara Ekadashi
Apara Ekadashi is known as the Ekadashi that grants immense or limitless rewards. It is believed that observing this fast brings wealth, happiness, prosperity and spiritual merit. It is also considered to free a person from sins committed knowingly or unknowingly. Additionally, this fast is said to help in overcoming faults such as disrespect towards one’s teacher or guru. Observed with devotion and faith, it is believed to bring positive changes in life.

Preparation for the fast
Preparation for this fast should begin a day earlier. From 12 May onwards, one should eat a sattvic (pure vegetarian) diet and keep the mind calm. Onion and garlic should be avoided on this day. If possible, one should also avoid eating dinner and follow a disciplined lifestyle to gain the full benefit of the fast.

Apara Ekadashi Puja Vidhi
On 13 May, one should take a bath in the morning and wear clean clothes. After this, an idol or picture of Lord Vishnu should be placed on a yellow seat. The Lord is offered incense, a lamp, fruits, yellow flowers, sweets and yellow clothes. Tulsi leaves are especially important as they are very dear to Lord Vishnu.

Rule related to Tulsi
On Ekadashi, it is considered forbidden to pluck Tulsi leaves or offer water to the Tulsi plant. Therefore, Tulsi leaves should be collected a day earlier and kept aside for use in worship.

What to do during the fast
Chanting the mantra “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” is considered highly auspicious on this day. Listening to the fast story and performing the aarti of the Lord are also important. If possible, prasad should be distributed among as many people as possible, as this increases spiritual merit.

What to avoid
On this day, eating rice is prohibited. Even if someone is not observing the fast, avoiding rice is still considered auspicious. One should also avoid anger, negative thoughts and harsh speech so that the full benefits of the fast can be received.
