NEW DELHI : For many salaried professionals in India, the last working day of the month brings a welcome notification: “Salary Credited.” While it’s tempting to celebrate with online shopping or weekend plans, financial experts say the first 24 hours after receiving your salary are the best time to organise your money.

A clear salary plan helps you pay bills on time, build savings, prepare for emergencies and work towards long-term goals like buying a home, funding higher education or planning retirement.

Whether you’re just starting your career or supporting a family, budgeting can make every rupee work harder.

Why Salary Day Matters
Many people spend freely during the first week after payday and struggle to manage expenses later in the month. Planning your budget as soon as your salary is credited helps you:

  • Avoid unnecessary spending
  • Never miss EMI or bill payments
  • Save consistently every month
  • Invest regularly for future goals
  • Reduce financial stress

The key is to pay yourself first by setting aside savings and investments before spending on discretionary items.

Step 1: Calculate Your In-Hand Salary
Your budget should be based on the amount that actually reaches your bank account after deductions such as Provident Fund (PF), professional tax and income tax.

For example, if your in-hand salary is ₹60,000, plan your expenses around that figure rather than your annual CTC.

Step 2: Follow A Practical Budget Formula
Instead of trying to track every rupee manually, use a simple percentage-based approach.

50% – Essential Expenses
Allocate around half your salary to fixed monthly needs, including:

  • House rent or home loan EMI
  • Groceries
  • Electricity and utility bills
  • Mobile and internet
  • Children’s school fees
  • Transportation
  • Insurance premiums

These are non-negotiable expenses that should be paid first.

20% – Savings And Investments
Before spending on lifestyle purchases, transfer money towards:

  • Emergency fund
  • Mutual fund SIPs
  • Public Provident Fund (PPF)
  • National Pension System (NPS)
  • Fixed deposits
  • Recurring deposits

Automating these transfers can help maintain consistency.

20% – Lifestyle And Personal Spending
Keep a separate budget for:

  • Dining out
  • Entertainment
  • Shopping
  • OTT subscriptions
  • Travel
  • Hobbies

Having a fixed amount prevents impulsive spending.

10% – Future Goals Or Extra Debt Repayment
Use the remaining portion to:

  • Prepay loans
  • Save for a vacation
  • Build a home down payment fund
  • Upgrade skills through online courses
  • Invest in career development

Build An Emergency Fund
Financial planners generally recommend maintaining an emergency fund covering at least three to six months of essential expenses. This can provide a cushion during unexpected situations such as medical emergencies, job loss or urgent family needs.

Start small if needed, even a fixed monthly contribution can gradually build a meaningful reserve.

Automate Your Finances
One of the easiest ways to stay disciplined is to automate recurring payments.

Consider setting up automatic transfers for:

  • SIP investments
  • Savings account transfers
  • EMI payments
  • Insurance premiums
  • Utility bills

Automation reduces the temptation to spend money meant for future goals.

Keep Lifestyle Inflation In Check
As income grows, spending often increases too. While occasional rewards are healthy, avoid increasing fixed expenses every time you receive a salary hike.

Instead, consider directing a significant portion of any increment towards savings or investments before adjusting your lifestyle.

Review Your Budget Every Month
Your expenses change over time. At the end of each month, review:

  • How much you saved
  • Where you overspent
  • Bills that increased
  • Subscriptions you no longer use
  • Financial goals for the coming month
  • A monthly review can help you make small adjustments that add up over time.

Common Salary Planning Mistakes To Avoid

  • Spending before budgeting
  • Delaying savings until month-end
  • Depending heavily on credit cards
  • Ignoring emergency savings
  • Missing bill due dates
  • Not tracking recurring subscriptions
  • Borrowing for non-essential purchases

Salary day isn’t just about seeing a bank balance increase, it’s an opportunity to build stronger financial habits. By budgeting as soon as your salary is credited, prioritising savings and investments, and keeping discretionary spending in check, you can work towards greater financial stability and long-term goals.
