New Delhi: In a sign of how fragile diplomacy remains in West Asia, Iran has said no date has been fixed for the next round of negotiations with the United States. This comes at a time when maritime tensions have exacerbated problems and ceasefire disputes have deepened mistrust, especially current issues simmering around the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh stressed that both sides must first agree on a “framework of understanding” before returning to the table, indicating that recent high-level talks have failed to produce the clarity needed for further engagement.
Strait tensions and ceasefire uncertainties
The absence of a negotiation timeline comes against the backdrop of renewed instability in the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran has repeatedly moved to restrict maritime traffic in response to a US naval blockade of its ports. Initial effective closing of the Strait, to later US response of a blockade of its own, has now exacted towards fresh tensions.
Tehran argues that its actions are a reaction to what it sees as violations of the US-brokered ceasefire linked to the broader Iran-Israel-Lebanon conflict. For Iran the first signs of distrust can be pointed out when its inclusion of Lebanon in the ceasefire was betrayed by Israeli attacks on the country.
Things subsequently turned to maritime uncertainties, with Iran having earlier allowed limited commercial passage during the truce, now accusing the US Washington of undermining those terms by discriminating against Iranian vessels. The crisis has intensified in recent days, with the strait’s closure raising fears of further escalation as the fragile ceasefire window narrows.
No clarity on next round of talks
Thus, while the first round of talks have convened, what transpired within that time, seems not to be too optimistic when it comes to hopes of the next round of peace talks. On the diplomatic front, the last round of talks ended in Islamabad without an agreement.
This makes it clear that disagreements exist, be it over Iran’s nuclear programme, reparations of the war or Iran’s military proxies in West Asia. While the American President Donald Trump has struck a more optimistic tone publicly, uncertainties remain as to how successful the next phase of ceasefire terms and peace talks go.
