New Delhi : Gmail users may finally see a long-awaited change that many thought would never happen. Google appears to be working on a new feature that could allow users to change their Gmail email address itself, something that has traditionally been locked once an account is created. While Google has allowed users with non-Gmail login emails to make changes for years, those with an “@gmail.com” address have largely been stuck with what they chose on day one. That situation now seems set to change, and interestingly, India could be among the first markets to see signs of this update.
Clues about this feature have surfaced on a Google support page that talks about a new, gradually rolling-out option for Gmail users. According to the page, Google is preparing to let people change their Gmail address even if it ends with “@gmail.com”. This is a clear shift from Google’s long-standing position, which stated that Gmail addresses usually cannot be changed once created. The support page detailing the new process is currently visible only in Hindi, which has raised eyebrows and led to speculation that the rollout may be starting with Indian users or, at the very least, that India is among the early regions seeing these changes documented.
What makes this update particularly notable is how Google plans to handle existing data and account access. Users who switch to a new Gmail address will not lose access to their old one. Instead, the original Gmail ID will be converted into an alias. This means emails sent to both the old and new addresses will land in the same inbox. Google also says that all existing data, including emails, photos, messages, and other account information, will remain untouched. From a user’s point of view, the account stays the same, only the visible email address changes.
Google explains the importance of the account email by stating, “The email address associated with your Google Account is the address you use to sign in to Google services. This email address helps you and others identify your account.” It then adds that users will be able to change a Gmail address ending in “@gmail.com” to a new Gmail address, something that was not possible earlier.
There are, however, some restrictions in place. Once a user changes their Gmail address, they will not be able to modify or delete the new address for the next 12 months. While the old Gmail address can be reused later, users will not be allowed to create a brand-new Gmail account using that old address during this one-year period. Google is also limiting how many times this can be done. Each account can change its Gmail address up to three times, allowing a total of four Gmail addresses over the lifetime of the account.
Google has also clarified that the old email address will continue to appear in certain places for some time. For example, calendar events created before the change may still show the original Gmail ID, and older instances across Google services may not reflect the update immediately. Users will still be able to send emails using their old address as well, and importantly, that address will remain reserved for them and cannot be taken over by another user.
The discovery of this support page was first shared in the Google Pixel Hub Telegram group, and its early appearance in Hindi suggests it may have gone live sooner than intended. While the feature itself is not active yet, the level of detail on the support page strongly indicates that Google is close to launching it publicly.
If and when the feature goes live, users will be able to initiate the Gmail address change from the “My Account” section of their Google account settings. Given how many people created their Gmail IDs years ago, often as teenagers or before realising how permanent and important that address would become, this update could be a big relief. As one widely liked comment puts it, “Huge if true. Many of us have had Gmail since the beginning when we didn’t know it would matter this much.”
