Thiruvananthapuram: The Indian Navy organized a beach clean-up drive at Shanghumugham Beach on 11th and 12th December, following the Operational Demonstration held as part of Navy Week 2025. The effort aimed to reinforce the Navy’s commitment to environmental protection and responsible coastal stewardship.
The clean-up was coordinated by Lt Cdr Anirudh Chakrapani and Lt Cdr Vipin Dagar, under the guidance of Commodore Varghese Matthew, Naval Officer-in-Charge (Kerala). A large team of naval personnel participated, removing plastic waste, litter and debris along the shoreline.

Local authorities and beachgoers appreciated the initiative, noting the immediate visible improvement in the beach’s cleanliness. The activity also helped spread awareness on maintaining public spaces and reducing plastic pollution along Kerala’s coastline.
Such initiatives reflect the Indian Navy’s sustained efforts to contribute positively to the community while championing environmental conservation as an integral part of its ethos.
Beaches in Thiruvananthapuram has been receiving flak from tourists following the waste dumping by locals and by hotels who dump food waste for the past many years. Even though they have been warned by the local administration not to do so, the menace continued.
“Such initiatives by the Navy and other organizations is a welcome step. Hope more such initiatives happen and more youngsters get inspired by the clean-up work”, said Keerthana B Nair, an engineering student from Thiruvananthapuram.
