New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday crossed a major political milestone, becoming the longest-serving Prime Minister in India since the Constitution came into force. To mark the occasion, he reflected on the values of public service, humility and duty that he said form the foundation of good governance.
Having first assumed office on May 26, 2014, he completed 4,399 consecutive days as Prime Minister, overtaking the record of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who served 4,398 uninterrupted days as the head of an elected government after the first general elections in 1952.
In a message posted on X, Modi said public trust could only be earned through selfless service and dedication to the people.
“Public service is the greatest measure of good governance. It is only the individual who works tirelessly with humility, dedication, and a sense of duty who earns the trust of the people,” the Prime Minister wrote.
Invoking a Sanskrit verse on leadership, Modi stressed that rulers must remain committed to the welfare of citizens and govern with humility.
“One who is devoted by nature, every intent on the welfare of his subjects. A king with a humble soul indeed attains the highest glory,” he said.
NDA leaders have poured in congratulatory messages for the Prime Minister.
In his congratulatory message, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the 12 years of PM Modi’s governance “have been about restoring India’s pride, cultural renaissance, and freeing the nation from the mentality of servitude.”
In an op-ed for India Today, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that PM Modi has “given the people not only schemes and programmes but also a clear goal, a broad vision, and a national resolve filled with confidence.”
“This occasion is not merely about counting achievements but about understanding the comprehensive transformation that has strengthened the faith of citizens in India’s capabilities,” he wrote.
On his part, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised PM Modi as a “tireless Karmayogi” guided by the principle of “Nation First”, saying his years in office have been marked by unwavering dedication to India’s progress, steadfast commitment to the welfare of its people, and transformative leadership in the service of the nation.
Meanwhile, global leaders have also joined in to congratulate the Prime Minister on his milestone.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim led the international accolades, praising the Indian leader’s immense contribution to the nation’s global ascent.
Ambassador Gor posted, “Congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on becoming India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister. This achievement is a powerful testament to his decades of dedicated public service and leadership! Wishing him all the best.”
