NEW DELHI : Rohit Sharma wants to continue playing ODIs for India, with the 2027 World Cup remaining his ultimate goal. However, the Indian men’s team selection panel, led by Ajit Agarkar, has reportedly made up its mind and informed both Rohit and head coach Gautam Gambhir that it plans to move on.
According to reports, Rohit is unhappy with the decision and spoke to BCCI officials during the ongoing ODI series in England.
“The national selectors are keen that Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored two hundreds in three innings, get a longer rope. There are around 20 games, and Jaiswal needs to be given those 20 games,” news agency PTI quoted a senior BCCI source as saying.
“No one can tell Rohit to retire, but this is very clear that going forward for the home series vs West Indies in September, the selectors would like to look forward. Rohit’s future is a decision that he needs to take,” the official adde
Reports also suggest that Rohit and the selectors were not on the same page regarding his Test retirement either. The former captain announced his retirement from the format via social media before the England tour last year.
As per PTI, the selection committee did not want Rohit to make a decision on his retirement after playing only two of the five Tests in England. However, Rohit had reportedly made himself available for the entire series and did not plan to feature only in the opening two matches.

Rohit is expected to be succeeded by fellow Mumbai batter Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has impressed whenever given an opportunity. While Jaiswal has established himself as a regular in Test cricket, he is yet to seal a spot in white-ball cricket due to the wealth of talent at India’s disposal.
However, with Rohit’s potential exit from the ODI setup, Jaiswal is expected to receive an extended run in the format.
