New Delhi: Geetu Mohandas’ Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups has crossed the Rs 137 crore mark in India after two days, but its second-day performance has raised concerns about its hold at the box office. Yash’s film, which opened with Rs 101.10 crore net on Wednesday, managed Rs 36.40 crore net on Thursday, according to trade website Sacnilk. That represents a steep 64 per cent fall in collections.
The film recorded an overall occupancy of 26.6 per cent across 19,413 shows on its second day. Its Hindi version continued to lead the regional language releases, while Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam contributed the remaining collections. With Thursday’s numbers added, Toxic has earned Rs 137.50 crore net in India.
The drop becomes more noticeable when Toxic’s second-day numbers are compared with Dhurandhar: The Revenge. Aditya Dhar’s Ranveer Singh starrer collected Rs 80.72 crore on its second day, almost twice Toxic’s Thursday haul. Dhurandhar 2 had already accumulated around Rs 226 crore in India within two days, including Rs 102.55 crore from its opening day and Rs 81 crore on day two.
Toxic had a stronger start than the first Dhurandhar film, which earned around Rs 32 crore on its second day. However, the sequel has now opened up a considerable lead over Yash’s film.
Toxic opening day numbers
Toxic began its box office run with Rs 101.10 crore net in India and recorded Rs 140 crore in worldwide gross collections on its opening day. Its overall occupancy stood at 56.1 per cent across 24,579 shows.
The Hindi version contributed Rs 55 crore, while the Kannada release earned Rs 23.30 crore. Despite opening on a strong note, the film has faced criticism over its violence, sensual sequences and perceived lack of emotional depth. Social media reactions have also fuelled memes and trolling around the film.
The weekend now becomes important for Toxic. A rise in footfalls over Friday and Saturday could help the film recover some of the momentum lost on its second day. Its performance will also determine whether it can challenge the year’s biggest box office performers.
Dhurandhar 2, Border 2, Peddi, Jana Nayagan and Karuppu are currently among the major theatrical performers in India this year. Toxic will need stronger numbers through the weekend to establish itself alongside them.
