New Delhi : Saint Lucia might be popular among travellers for its volcanic beaches, rainforests, and the warm Creole charm that extends to every corner of the Caribbean Islands. But what makes it even more unique is its name. It is, in fact, the ONLY country in the world to be named after a woman!

Who Was Saint Lucy?
Saint Lucy of Syracuse (now Sicily, is a Christian martyr celebrated for her courage and compassion. Reports suggest how Saint Lucy, born to a noble family of Sicily in the 3rd century, did not want to marry. Instead, she wanted to help the poor and eventually ended up distributing all her life’s wealth. The Emperor viewed this as an insult to the empire and condemned her to death. While there are different stories about her, what remains constant is that story of her dedication to the poor. Lucy, whose name can mean “light” or “lucid,” is also said to be the patron saint of the blind. She is often depicted with eyes on a cup or plate.

Further away in the world, the island of Saint Lucia was discovered by its first settlers on December 13, after their ship crashed there. Since December 13 is celebrated as Saint Lucy’s Day in Europe, the first settlers named the island in her honour.

History Of Saint Lucia Island
Saint Lucia was originally inhabited by the Arawak and Carib people, but later became a prized colony fought over by the French and the British for centuries. It changed hands 14 times before finally gaining independence in 1979. This mixed history is what gives Saint Lucia is vibrant multicultural flair, with French, British influences mingling with the iconic Caribbean charm.

Top Places To Visit In Saint Lucia
It often takes barely two hours to travel from one end of this island to the other. But don’t be fooled by its compact size! If you’re dreaming of visiting this island named after a woman, here are some must-see spots:

A hiker’s paradise, most outdoor excursions in Saint Lucia often begin at the twin volcanic peaks of Gros Piton and Petit Piton which are Saint Lucia’s most iconic landmarks and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. If you have the stamina, go for hikes here and get breathtaking views or admire them from a sunset cruise.

Soufrière
A charming town on the west coast, Soufrière is a nature buff’s dream, home to mineral springs, botanical gardens, and the world’s only drive-in volcano!

Marigot Bay
Once described as “the most beautiful bay in the Caribbean,” Marigot Bay is certainly worth a trip. It is sheltered by gorgeous trees, has a couple of swanky hotels next to it and is perfect for kayaking and sailing.
Pigeon Island National Park

This 44 acre island reserve is a historic site with old forts, walking trails, and stunning ocean views. It was an independent island surrounded by water before it was connected to the mainland using a causeway.

Anse Chastanet Beach
A good alternative to Reduit Beach, Anse Chastanet is a diver’s paradise with crystal-clear waters, coral reefs, and calm waves. Perfect for snorkeling and underwater photography.
