Viewers have praised the mythological epic for its scale, cinematography, sound design and performances, although several noted that the film takes time to gather momentum.
Starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, the nearly three-hour adaptation of Homer’s epic follows the Greek king’s long and dangerous journey home after the Trojan War.
Viewers Say The Film Rewards Patience
A recurring observation across early reactions was that The Odyssey opens at a deliberate pace. One viewer said the first 30 minutes take time to settle before Odysseus’s return journey transforms the film into a more exhilarating experience.
The same post praised Nolan for shifting between different moods, describing certain passages as unsettling enough to resemble horror while others carried the sweep of a commercial action spectacle. The final act, according to the viewer, delivers strong payoffs despite the film not relying on constant action.
Another audience member wrote that the film builds gradually before erupting into “wild intensity” and carrying that force through to the conclusion. Calling it a magnificent epic, the viewer said they were “still trembling” after the screening.

Matt Damon’s performance has received some of the strongest praise. Several viewers described his portrayal of Odysseus as among the finest work of his career, particularly applauding how he presents the character as a leader who survives through intelligence rather than sheer physical strength.

Anne Hathaway also earned praise for her performance as Penelope, which one viewer described as “hauntingly beautiful”. Robert Pattinson and Tom Holland became subjects of comparison, with one post arguing that Holland delivered the stronger performance.
