NEW DELHI : Renowned singer S Janaki breathed her last on Saturday (July 11). Her demise was confirmed by her granddaughter Apsara Vydyula through a heartbreaking post, mourning the loss. Several celebrities and public figures, including Tamil Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, Trisha Krishnan, Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, took to social media to pay tribute to the icon. Now, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over her passing. In his heartfelt tribute to the legendary playback singer, he said that the world of music and culture had lost a gem. He also highlighted her timeless songs that continue to be cherished across generations.

He wrote: “The passing of the distinguished playback singer S Janaki Amma is an irreparable loss to the world of music and culture. Her songs in various languages were popular across generations. They gave voice to every emotion with unparalleled grace as well as versatility.”
The Prime Minister added that her melodies would continue to captivate listeners for years to come. He also extended his heartfelt condolences to her family, countless admirers and the entire music fraternity. He ended his message with, “Om Shanti.”
Janaki Passes Away
The singer, known for hits such as Senthoora Poove, Thendral Vanthu Theendumbothu, Singara Velane Deva, Guvva Gorinkatho and more, died at the age of 88.
Janaki’s granddaughter, in an emotional post, wrote, “It is with profound sadness that I share the passing of my beloved grandmother and legendary singer, Smt S Janaki. She left us peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family. While our hearts are heavy, we are also filled with gratitude for the extraordinary life she lived and the immeasurable joy she brought to millions through her timeless music.”
Aparasa said that to the world, she was an iconic voice whose songs had become a part of countless memories but to their family, she was a loving grandmother whose warmth, humility, kindness, and grace would remain with them forever.
She requested everyone to respect their family’s privacy during the difficult time as they grieved and came to terms with the loss. She also thanked everyone for their love, prayers, and understanding.
Her last rites will be performed today in Mysuru. She will be accorded a state funeral, and her mortal remains will be kept at Maharaja’s College Grounds from 7:30 am on Sunday for the public to pay their final respects.
