New Delhi: A first year law student in Indore has been arrested for allegedly using an artificial intelligence (AI) tool to fabricate a fakeNEET UG question paper and selling it to aspirants via social media just days before the exam, police officials said on Tuesday. The accused reportedly misled students by claiming the paper was authentic, which increased the anxiety surrounding the high stakes medical entrance test.
Akshay Malviya, the accused, allegedly collected Rs 100 to 200 from about 25 buyers claiming that he had got access to the genuine question paper, said an official. He was arrested on Monday.
“He sent messages through Instagram, claiming he had the NEET question paper. However, the question paper he provided had no resemblance to the actual exam paper,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Prevention Branch) Rajesh Kumar Tripathi.
Malviya, a resident of Kanadiya area, created the fake question paper using ChatGpt, the DCP said. He appeared to have sold it to some 25 people but the number could increase, the official added.
The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for undergraduate medical courses was conducted afresh amid tight security on June 21 after the original exam, conducted on May 3, was cancelled due to the allegations of a paper leak.
The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) is India’s premier medical entrance examination conducted for admission to undergraduate courses such as MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other allied programs across government and private institutions. The exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and typically sees participation from over 20 lakh candidates every year, making it one of the most competitive entrance tests in the country.
The exam assesses students on subjects including Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (Botany and Zoology), and plays a crucial role in determining admission to top medical colleges like AIIMS and government medical institutions. Due to its scale and importance, even minor irregularities often trigger nationwide concern among students, parents, and authorities.
