New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will surpass Jawaharlal Nehru record of 4,398 days to become the longest continuously serving democratically elected Prime Minister in India’s history on 10th June 2026.
The milestone of reaching 4,399 consecutive days in office marks an era defined by massive administrative changes and offers an opportunity to look at different aspects of governance across decades. While much of the public debate surrounding this milestone focuses on infrastructure and economic shifts, a closer look at the social structure of the Union Cabinet reveals a significant evolution in how women participate at the highest levels of Indian governance.
When Jawaharlal Nehru formed his post-1952 elected cabinets, the political landscape looked vastly different. Even as the country celebrates historical governance records and implements long-term reforms like the Women’s Reservation Bill to alter future parliaments, the percentage of women in the active council of ministers remains modest compared to the overall population.
