New Delhi: The Telugu film industry has been home to some of India’s most talented actors including Ram Charan, Rashmika Mandanna, Pawan Kalyan, Nagarjuna and several others. Over the years, many of them have made their way to Bollywood, though some were successful and some were not.
With their Bollywood debut, these actors expanded their pan-India reach, and the Hindi cinema industry is welcoming the South actors with open hands. Let’s take a look at some Telugu actors who made their Hindi film debuts.
1. Ram Charan – Zanjeer
About the movie: Renowned actor Ram Charan, best known for SS Rajamouli’s directorial RRR, made his Bollywood debut with the Zanjeer. Also starring Priyanka Chopra, Sanjay Dutt and Prakash Raj, the film failed to impress but Ram Charan’s performance was appreciated. Years later, he gained global recognition with SS Rajamouli’s RRR.
2. Chiranjeevi – Pratibandh
About the movie: Megastar Chiranjeevi made his Hindi debut with Pratibandh in 1990. The action-packed thriller also starred Juhi Chawla, Rami Reddy, Harish Patel, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda. He later appeared in Aaj Ka Goonda Raaj (1992) and The Gentleman (1994).
3. Pawan Kalyan – Satyagraha
About the movie: The Power Star of Tollywood, Pawan Kalyan, made a brief appearance in Satyagraha (2013), also starring Amitabh Bachchan and Ajay Devgn. Though it was a cameo, it did mark his debut in Bollywood.
4. Rashmika Mandanna – Goodbye
About the movie: Rashmika Mandanna, who rose to fame with Sukumar’s directorial Puhspa: The Rise, made her Bollywood debut with Netflix original film, Goodbye. The movie, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Neena Gupta, received mixed reviews. Later in 2023, she gained more visibility with Ranbir Kapoor starrer Animal.
5. Tamannaah Bhatia – Chand Sa Roshan Chehra
About the movie: Tamannaah Bhatia made her Bollywood debut with 2005 film Chand Sa Roshan Chehra. She also appeared in a music video ‘Lafzon Mein’, featuring Abhijeet Sawant. She also appeared in Hindi movies including Himmatwala, Humshakals, Khamoshi, Bali Bouncer and Plan A Plan B.
6. Rana Daggubati – Dum Maaro Dum
About the movie: Actor Rana Daggubati made his Bollywood debut with Dum Maaro Dum (2011), also starring Bipasha Basu and Prateik Babbar. He went on to appear in several hits of Bollywood including Ghazi Attack, Baby and Department, among others.
7. Naga Chaitanya – Laal Singh Chaddha
About the movie: Telugu actor Naga Chaitanya made his Bollywood debut with Aamir Khan’s movie, Laal Singh Chaddha (2022). However, the film tanked at the Box Office.
8. Nagarjuna – Shiva
About the movie: Veteran Telugu actor Nagarjuna made his Bollywood debut with the Hindi remake of Shiva.n He went on to appear in Khuda Gawah, Drohi and Criminal. He was last seen in Ayan Mukerji’s Brahmaastra: Part One – Shiva.
9. Daggubati Venkatesh – Anari
About the movie: Renowned Telugu actor Daggubati Venkatesh made his Bollywood debut with Anari (1993) opposite Karisma Kapoor. He later appeared in the movie Taqdeerwala (1995). He was last seen in Salman Khan starrer Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan.
With Bollywood continuously embracing regional stars, the language barriers are no more a concern, thanks to advanced technology. While some had stellar debuts, others continue to navigate their place in the Hindi film industry.
