New Delhi: The Rs 72,000 figure linked to the 8th Pay Commission has sparked fresh interest among central government employees, but available records show it is not the official minimum pay demand submitted by recognised staff bodies.
The number has been circulating widely in recent reports and online discussions as expectations build around the next pay revision.
However, the formal demand on record from the National Council–Joint Consultative Machinery (NC-JCM), Staff Side, one of the key representative bodies of central government employees, is for a minimum basic pay of Rs 69,000 along with a proposed fitment factor of 3.83.
That proposal has been reported in multiple mainstream publications citing the memorandum submitted ahead of the 8th Pay Commission consultation process.
So where did Rs 72,000 come from? The figure appears to stem from projected salary calculations and speculative estimates tied to revised pay matrix levels under different fitment factor scenarios.
In some cases, projected salaries for certain employee levels move close to Rs 72,000, which may then be presented as a headline figure. It is not the same as an officially submitted minimum basic pay demand.
The distinction matters because minimum pay determines the starting point of salary revision across the system, while projected figures for specific pay levels vary depending on grade, service level and allowances.
For lakhs of employees and pensioners tracking the 8th Pay Commission, this means the Rs 72,000 number should be treated as an estimate being discussed in public space rather than a confirmed proposal.
As of now, the government has not announced any final pay structure under the 8th Pay Commission. Recommendations will be prepared after consultations with employee representatives, departments and stakeholders, and any salary revision will require official approval before implementation.
For employees waiting for clarity, the real number to watch may not be viral estimates, but the fitment factor eventually accepted by the Centre.
