New Delhi: The first motion poster of the highly-anticipated film, Batwara 1947, has finally been unveiled. Earlier, the title of the film was Lahore 1947, which has now been changed to Batwara 1947. The film narrates the story of the horrors the people had to go through during the 1947 partition.

The motion poster begins with the words on screen, “In times of hatred and fear, he chose courage.” The poster then shows Sunny Deol fighting to protect his family amid the riots, killings, fear and partition.
The caption of the poster reads, “In times of hatred and fear, he chose courage. Watch #Batwara1947 in theatres from 14th August 2026.”

Along with the motion posters, the makers also announced the release date of the film. The Sunny Deol’s patriotic drama is scheduled to release on August 14, 2026.
Why did the film undergo a title change?
According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, the title of the film was changed because Aamir Khan, who is producing the movie, doesn’t want to name it ‘Lahore 1947’. But the rights of Batwara belonged to producer Salim Akhtar. So, Aamir met Salim and his family and convinced them to give away the rights to the title.
What is the movie all about?
The film is based on Asghar Wajahat’s 1989 play ‘Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya O Jamyai Nai’. Set during the 1947 partition, it narrates the story of a Muslim family from Lucknow who migrate to Lahore and are allotted a haveli, whose only remaining resident is an old Hindu woman who refuses to leave.
The play shows a newly arrived Mirza family, who are shocked to see Mai, the elderly mother of the previous Hindu owners, after they move into the haveli. While they try to get her to leave, they soon develop a deep and affectionate bond with her, crossing lines of religion and caste.
When she eventually dies, the fanatics oppose giving her a proper funeral. And in a powerful act of courage and brotherhood, the Mirza family and local neighbours risk their own safety to perform the final rites according to Hindu traditions.
