Magnesium supplements are everywhere, but does everyone need them?

New Delhi: Magnesium has moved from being an overlooked mineral to a staple of the modern supplement stack. From magnesium glycinate for sleep to magnesium citrate for digestion, there’s a form of magnesium for almost all your problems. But the growing popularity of magnesium raises an important question: who actually needs supplementation?

Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in hundreds of biochemical reactions, including energy metabolism, muscle and nerve function, glucose regulation and protein synthesis, to name a few. The body regulates magnesium through the intestines and kidneys, adjusting absorption and urinary excretion according to its needs. This system helps maintain magnesium within a relatively narrow physiological range. For most people, the priority should therefore be meeting requirements through food rather than automatically reaching for a supplement.

People who lack magnesium
People who are more likely to have inadequate magnesium intake include those with diets low in whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds and leafy greens. Certain gastrointestinal conditions that impair absorption, prolonged diarrhoea, alcohol dependence and some medications can also increase the risk of deficiency or depletion. Diuretics and proton pump inhibitors, for example, can affect magnesium status in some individuals, particularly with prolonged use.

Symptoms of magnesium deficiency
Symptoms such as muscle cramps, weakness, fatigue or abnormal heart rhythms can occur with significant magnesium deficiency but these symptoms are nonspecific and should not be interpreted as proof of deficiency. A blood magnesium test can also have limitations because most magnesium is stored in tissues and bone rather than circulating in the blood. Clinical context and dietary and medication history therefore matter.

Forms of magnesium
The forms of magnesium also deserves attention. Magnesium citrate is relatively well absorbed and can have a laxative effect, making it useful in some constipation-focused formulations. Magnesium glycinate is commonly chosen when gastrointestinal tolerance is a priority. The choice should depend on the individual’s needs rather than the assumption that one form is universally superior.

More magnesium does not necessarily mean more benefit. High supplemental intakes can cause diarrhoea and gastrointestinal discomfort, while excessive intake can be dangerous, particularly in people with impaired kidney function. Magnesium can also interfere with the absorption of certain medications, including some antibiotics and thyroid medications, so timing and medical guidance can matter.

Magnesium is essential, but supplementation is not automatically essential for everyone. It is a physiologically active mineral and should not be treated as a wellness add-on. The appropriate approach is to consider dietary intake, individual risk factors, medications and kidney function before deciding whether supplementation is warranted. When the body already has effective mechanisms for regulating a mineral, indiscriminate supplementation can be unnecessary and, at sufficiently high doses, potentially harmful.
