Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Uttar Pradesh
Located on the western bank of the Ganga in Varanasi, Kashi Vishwanath is revered as one of Hinduism’s holiest shrines and occupies a special place among the 12 Jyotirlingas. Hindu scriptures say Lord Shiva resides here eternally, making it one of the most significant pilgrimage sites for devotees.
A darshan of the deity is believed to cleanse past sins, purify the soul and guide devotees towards liberation from the cycle of birth and death. The temple’s origins stretch back thousands of years, while historical evidence suggests that one of its earliest major structures existed during the Gupta Empire around 500 CE.
Trimbakeshwar Temple, Maharashtra
Situated near Nashik at the foothills of the Brahmagiri Hills, Trimbakeshwar is among the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas and is distinguished by its unique lingam representing Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva together. The temple complex is also home to the revered Kushavarta Kund, regarded as the source of the Godavari River, often referred to as the Ganga of the South.
The Shiva Purana recounts that Sage Gautama undertook severe penance after accidentally committing the sin of killing a cow. Moved by his devotion, Lord Shiva released the Ganga from his matted locks, allowing it to flow from the Brahmagiri Hills as the sacred Godavari River. Another legend states that Shiva appeared here as an infinite pillar of light to settle a dispute between Brahma and Vishnu over supremacy. Following a curse pronounced by Brahma, the Jyotirlinga came to rest within a depression below the ground.
Somnath Temple, Gujarat
Standing along Gujarat’s Arabian Sea coastline, Somnath is traditionally recognised as the first of the 12 Jyotirlingas. Although the temple has been destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries, it continues to be one of the country’s most revered Shiva shrines. Hindu tradition identifies Somnath as the sacred place where Lord Shiva manifested in the form of an endless pillar of divine light.
According to mythology, the Moon God, Chandra, constructed the original temple in gold to worship Lord Shiva and seek relief from a curse that had caused his radiance to fade. This legend is believed to have inspired the temple’s name, Somnath, meaning ‘Lord of the Moon’. The temple also stands at the confluence of the Kapila, Hiran and the mystical Saraswati rivers before they meet the Arabian Sea, making the site especially sacred for ritual bathing and prayers.
Mahakaleshwar Temple, Madhya Pradesh
Located in the ancient city of Ujjain, Mahakaleshwar Temple is renowned for its distinctive Bhasma Aarti, one of the most revered rituals dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is also unique because it houses the world’s only south-facing or Dakshinamurti Jyotirlinga, symbolising Shiva’s supreme authority over time and death in his form as Mahakal. Omkareshwar Temple, Madhya Pradesh
Omkareshwar, located on Mandhata or Shivpuri Island in the Narmada River, is revered as the fourth Jyotirlinga and one of Lord Shiva’s most powerful self-manifested forms. The island itself is believed to resemble the sacred Hindu symbol ‘Om’ when viewed from above, adding to its religious significance. Flowing around the island, the holy Narmada River is considered sacred, and devotees believe that taking a ritual dip or offering prayers along its banks helps cleanse sins and brings inner peace.
Ancient Puranic texts also state that Lord Shiva journeys across the three worlds each day before returning to Omkareshwar at night, making the evening prayers and Shayan rituals especially significant for pilgrims. Tradition further holds that the pilgrimage remains incomplete without visiting both the Omkareshwar Temple on the island and the Mamleshwar Temple situated on the southern bank of the Narmada.
Bhimashankar Temple, Maharashtra
Surrounded by the dense forests of the Sahyadri Hills, Bhimashankar is a revered Jyotirlinga that combines spiritual significance with scenic natural surroundings. According to Hindu mythology, the shrine marks the place where Lord Shiva appeared in his fierce form to defeat the demon Tripurasura, also known in some traditions as Bhima.
It is believed that the river flowing through the region originated from the sweat of Lord Shiva during this cosmic battle. Pilgrims visit the temple seeking freedom from fear, relief from karmic debts and protection from obstacles and negative influences. The temple’s central black-stone structure dates back to the 13th century, reflecting its long-standing place in India’s religious heritage.
