NEW DELHI : Ashadha Amavasya is deemed as an extremely significant day in Sanatan Dharma. This date is dedicated to ancestors. On this day, bathing in holy rivers, giving charity and performing Shraddha are regarded as very auspicious. Here is everything you need to know about this day.

When Is Ashadha Amavasya?
The Amavasya Tithi begins on July 13, 2026, at 06:49 PM and ends on July 14, 2026, at 03:12 PM. Based on Udaya Tithi, the primary day for fasting, bathing, and rituals is July 14.

It is said that offering prayers brings peace to ancestors and rituals performed on this day help free the soul from ancestral curses. Also, those suffering from Kaal Sarp Dosha or obstacles that keep cropping up also often observe Paush Amavasya rituals for relief. Additionally, doing charity also helps cleanse negative karmic patterns.

Remedies To Get Rid Of Pitra Dosha On Amavasya
Amavasya is considered one of the most effective days for Pitra Dosh Nivaran. You can do the following:
1. Perform Tarpan, Pind Daan Or Shraddha

After your morning bath, offer these rituals for your ancestors. It is believed to bring peace to them and reduce Pitra Dosh.

2. Donate Sesame Seeds And Food Grains

Sesame (til) has a special place in ancestral rituals. Donating it is considered auspicious.

3. Light A Lamp Under The Peepal Tree

Lighting a mustard oil diya and circumambulating the tree in the evening is believed to reduce ancestral obstacles and bring blessings.

4. Light A Diya In The South Direction At Home

In the evening, light a lamp facing south and remember your ancestors. This is believed to bring peace and stability in the household.

Puja Vidhi For Amavasya

  • Take a bath in the morning. If you don’t have a river nearby, add a few drops of Gangajal to your regular bath.
  • Offer Arghya to the Sun
  • Face south and offer water mixed with sesame seeds to your ancestors. This is done to show respect and gratitude.
  • You should also offer water to the Peepal tree in the morning.
  • In the evening, light a mustard oil lamp under the tree and walk around it 5 or 7 times.
  • Donate food, grains, black sesame, blankets or clothes to the poor or to a Brahmin.
  • If possible, observe a fast and worship Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu.
