Can lifestyle changes really help manage PCOS?

New Delhi: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common hormonal disorders affecting women of reproductive age. It is estimated to affect millions of women worldwide and can lead to a wide range of health concerns, including irregular menstrual cycles, acne, unwanted facial and body hair, weight gain, difficulty losing weight, and fertility problems. While there is no permanent cure for PCOS, doctors say the condition can be effectively managed with the right combination of medical care and healthy lifestyle changes.

According to Dr. Jasmin Rath, MBBS, MD, Senior Consultant, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Apollo Cradle & Children’s Hospital, Kondapur, many women believe that natural therapies alone can reverse PCOS. However, this is one of the biggest misconceptions surrounding the condition. PCOS is a complex hormonal disorder that usually requires a comprehensive treatment plan rather than a single solution.

One of the most important yet often overlooked aspects of PCOS management is stress control. Chronic stress can affect hormone production and may worsen some of the symptoms associated with the condition. Finding healthy ways to relax and improve emotional well-being can therefore play an important role in supporting overall health.

One activity that experts often recommend as part of a healthy lifestyle is yoga. While it does not treat or cure PCOS, it can help reduce stress, improve flexibility, encourage better sleep, and promote a positive mood. Regular practice may also improve overall well-being, making it easier for women to cope with the physical and emotional challenges of living with PCOS.

Certain yoga postures are commonly suggested for women with PCOS because they encourage gentle stretching, improve blood circulation, and promote relaxation. These include Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation), Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose), Baddha Konasana (Butterfly Pose), and Balasana (Child’s Pose). Breathing exercises, known as pranayama, along with meditation, can also help calm the mind and reduce stress levels. However, experts advise that the choice of exercises should always depend on an individual’s fitness level, age, and overall health.

Doctors stress that yoga should be viewed as a supportive therapy rather than a replacement for medical treatment. Managing PCOS successfully usually requires a combination of approaches. A balanced diet rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats is essential. Regular physical activity, especially cardio exercises, helps improve insulin sensitivity, supports weight management, and benefits overall hormonal health. Maintaining a healthy weight can also reduce the severity of many PCOS symptoms.

Long-term lifestyle changes are equally important. Getting enough sleep, limiting processed and sugary foods, staying physically active, and following prescribed medications can all contribute to better symptom control. Regular medical check-ups also help doctors monitor hormone levels and address any complications early.

Dr. Rath says women diagnosed with PCOS should focus on building sustainable habits instead of looking for quick fixes. Stress management techniques, healthy eating, exercise, and medical care work best when followed consistently over time. Together, these measures can improve quality of life, reduce symptoms, and support long-term reproductive and metabolic health.

Experts emphasise that every woman experiences PCOS differently. A personalised treatment plan developed with a healthcare professional remains the best way to manage the condition. While lifestyle changes alone may not eliminate PCOS, they can make a significant difference in helping women lead healthier, more active, and confident lives.
