NEW DELHI : Abhishek Sharma created history and set a stunning world record as he scored the 13th half-century of his career for India in T20I cricket during the first T20I between India and England on Wednesday (July 1) at the Chester-le-Street Ground in Durham. The 25-year-old got the visitors’ innings back on track after Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan’s early dismissal had them reeling at 6-2 after two overs.
Abhishek launched a counterattack in the powerplay and reached his fifty in just 20 balls. The 25-year-old departed after making 59 runs in just 24 balls. Through the course of his innings, the ICC World No. 2 T20I batter hit four sixes (and six boundaries) and, as a result, completed 100 maximums in T20I cricket.

Abhishek has set a new world record by becoming the quickest player to reach 100 sixes in T20Is for a full-member nation (by balls). He broke a record held by a West Indies star, Evin Lewis. Among Indians players, Abhishek is the first cricketer to achieve the feat in fewer than 1000 balls and broke Suryakumar Yadav’s record.
Abhishek is also the second-quickest among players from a Test-playing nation to get the milestone by innings. The record is held by Lewis, who reached the milestone in 42 innings. The star opener broke Suryakumar Yadav’s record by just one innings as the quickest Indian to 100 sixes in T20Is.
Overall, Abhishek is the fourth Indian player to register 100 maximums in the shortest format of the game after Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Suryakumar.
