New Delhi: As people live longer, maintaining brain health has become one of the biggest priorities for healthy ageing. Scientists have long known that ageing can gradually affect memory, attention, learning ability and overall cognitive function. Conditions such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease are becoming increasingly common worldwide, prompting researchers to investigate lifestyle and dietary factors that may help preserve brain health for longer.

Among the nutrients attracting growing attention is vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant best known for supporting immunity and skin health. However, emerging evidence suggests that its benefits may extend far beyond these traditional roles, potentially influencing how the brain ages over time.

A recent study has added to this growing body of research by examining the relationship between vitamin C levels and brain structure in older adults. The findings suggest that individuals with higher blood levels of vitamin C tend to have better-preserved brain tissue and stronger connectivity between important brain regions linked to memory and cognition. While the research does not prove that vitamin C directly prevents cognitive decline, it offers valuable insights into how this everyday nutrient could support healthy brain ageing.

Vitamin C and healthy brain ageing: New study
The study, published in the journal PLOS One, analysed blood samples and brain MRI scans from 2,044 adults aged 64 years and older in Japan. Researchers measured participants’ blood plasma vitamin C levels and compared them with various markers of brain health.

The results showed that people with lower vitamin C levels tended to have:

  • Reduced grey matter volume in the brain
  • Weaker connectivity within the brain’s default mode network
  • Structural changes commonly associated with ageing

Importantly, these associations remained significant even after researchers accounted for factors such as age, sex, education, physical activity, smoking, diabetes, hypertension and other health conditions.

How does vitamin C support brain health
Scientists believe vitamin C may benefit the brain through several biological mechanisms.

1. Powerful antioxidant protection

The brain is highly active and consumes large amounts of oxygen, making it particularly vulnerable to oxidative stress. Vitamin C acts as a powerful antioxidant, helping neutralise harmful free radicals that can damage brain cells over time.

2. Supports neurotransmitter production

Vitamin C plays a role in the production of neurotransmitters, the chemical messengers that allow brain cells to communicate effectively. These neurotransmitters are essential for mood, memory and cognitive performance.

3. Helps maintain healthy brain cells

Research suggests vitamin C contributes to maintaining healthy cell membranes and supports neuronal development, maturation and overall brain function. The brain actively concentrates vitamin C at levels higher than those found in the bloodstream, highlighting its importance to neurological health.

Does this mean Vitamin C prevent dementia
Not necessarily. One of the most important points from the study is that it found an association rather than a direct cause-and-effect relationship.

This means researchers observed that people with higher vitamin C levels tended to have healthier brain structures, but they cannot yet conclude that vitamin C itself directly prevented brain ageing or cognitive decline.

However, the findings align with previous studies showing links between adequate vitamin C levels and better cognitive performance. Several reviews have reported that individuals with higher vitamin C status often perform better on tests involving memory, attention and information processing.

Best food sources of Vitamin C
Experts recommend obtaining vitamin C primarily through a balanced diet rather than relying solely on supplements.

Some excellent vitamin C-rich foods include:

  • Oranges
  • Lemons
  • Guava
  • Kiwi fruit
  • Strawberries
  • Bell peppers
  • Broccoli
  • Tomatoes
  • Kale
  • Spinach and other leafy greens

The latest research suggests that higher blood levels of vitamin C are associated with better-preserved grey matter and stronger brain network connectivity in older adults.
