New Delhi: The Delhi government on Sunday (June 14) launched a massive ‘Maa Yamuna Riverbank Cleanliness Drive’ across 28 ghats under the campaign theme ‘Ek Sankalp – Swachh Yamuna’, with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta leading the initiative at Dashmesh Ghat in Geeta Colony.
The drive, which began at 6 am, saw participation from volunteers, BJP workers and civic officials, with hundreds of tonnes of waste being cleared from the riverbanks as part of the ongoing cleanliness push.
Speaking at the event, CM Rekha Gupta said volunteers from multiple organisations joined the effort and stressed that the campaign is a continuous initiative aimed at preventing waste dumping into the Yamuna. She also urged citizens to treat river cleanliness as a collective responsibility.
“Since early morning at 6:00 AM, the Yamuna cleaning work has been going on continuously. While cleaning the Yamuna is entirely the government’s responsibility, we as citizens have duty toward it; we must not throw any garbage into the Yamuna. We have to work together on this.”
Delhi Ministers including Parvesh Verma and Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta also took part in the drive, along with BJP MPs and MLAs including Manoj Tiwari, Ramvir Singh Bidhuri and Satish Upadhyay, who participated at different ghats across the city.
Parvesh Verma said the turnout reflected strong public participation, while Manoj Tiwari described the campaign as a sustained effort aligned with the Centre’s broader cleanliness mission.
The drive was carried out simultaneously at multiple locations along the Yamuna, with officials stating that it will continue as an ongoing exercise rather than a one-day event.
