New Delhi: A historic milestone in Indian political history will be reached on June 10, 2026, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi surpasses Jawaharlal Nehru to become the longest continuously serving democratically elected Prime Minister of India. Currently in his third consecutive term, PM Modi will complete 4,399 days in office on that date, one day more than Nehru’s 4,398-day tenure.
Nehru had taken oath as Prime Minister on May 13, 1952, following the constitution of the first Lok Sabha on April 17, 1952, and served until his death on May 27, 1964. PM Modi was first sworn in on May 26, 2014. He had earlier surpassed Indira Gandhi’s record of 4,088 days on July 25, 2025. Gandhi had served as Prime Minister from January 25, 1966 to March 24, 1977.
From a Rs 2.7 lakh cr economy to a global powerhouse
The scale of India’s economic transformation over the past decade offers a measure of what has changed. At independence, India’s GDP stood at around Rs 2.7 lakh crore. By 2026, it has expanded to nearly Rs 357.14 lakh crore, strengthening India’s position among the world’s largest economies. Where India averaged around 3.54% GDP growth during the Nehru era, the country has maintained 6.5-7% growth under PM Modi, retaining its status as the world’s fastest-growing major economy despite facing COVID-19, global inflation, geopolitical conflicts and supply chain disruptions.
Expanded global footprint and international recognition
The contrast in global engagement is equally striking. Nehru addressed three foreign parliaments during his lifetime; PM Modi has addressed 19 to date. On the honours front, Nehru received two foreign state decorations during his tenure, while PM Modi has received 30 international honours and state decorations, a reflection of India’s significantly expanded diplomatic stature. PM Modi is also leading the country in a very different era, where government decisions and actions are constantly monitored through 24-hour news coverage and social media, something that did not exist during Nehru’s time.
