New Delhi: Telangana’s name carries a fascinating story that stretches far beyond modern state boundaries. Historians and religious traditions widely associate it with Trilinga Desam, meaning the “land of three lingas”. The term refers to three revered Shiva temples that historically defined the cultural and spiritual landscape of the Telugu-speaking region. These shrines are not only important centres of worship but also living reminders of a shared heritage that predates the formation of Telangana by centuries.

Each site, from the riverbank temple of Kaleshwaram in present-day Telangana to the sacred hills of Srisailam and the historic temple town of Draksharamam in Andhra Pradesh, contributes to the story behind the state’s name. Their legends, architectural grandeur and enduring religious significance continue to attract pilgrims and travellers alike. On Telangana Formation Day, these temples offer a meaningful way to explore the roots of the state’s identity.

Temples connected to Telangana’s name
Kaleshwara Mukteswara Swamy Temple, Kaleshwaram
Among the three temples associated with Trilinga Desam, Kaleshwara Mukteswara Swamy Temple is the only one located within present-day Telangana. According to the Skanda Purana, Lord Yama prayed to Lord Shiva after countless devotees began attaining salvation through darshan alone. To restore the balance of life and death, Shiva placed the Kaleshwara Linga beside the Mukteswara Linga.

Connection to Telangana: The temple forms one of the three sacred pillars of the Trilinga tradition.

What makes it special: The sanctum houses two Shiva Lingas on a single pedestal, a rare feature in Hindu temple architecture. The shrine also stands at the confluence of the Godavari and Pranahita rivers and is considered highly significant for ancestral rites.

Location: Mahadevpur Mandal, Jayashankar Bhupalpally district, around 277 km from Hyderabad.

Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple, Srisailam
Located in the Nallamala Hills, Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple is one of the most important Shiva pilgrimage sites in India. Temple lore links it to Lord Kartikeya, who withdrew into solitude after Lord Ganesha’s marriage. Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are believed to have appeared here as Mallikarjuna and Mallika to remain close to their son.

The temple complex evolved over centuries under the Chalukyas, Vijayanagara rulers and Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji. It also shares a deep cultural connection with the indigenous Chenchu community.

Connection to Telangana: It is regarded as the second temple associated with Trilinga Desam.

What makes it special: The shrine is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and remains one of South India’s most revered Shiva temples.

Location: Srisailam, Andhra Pradesh.

Bhimeswara Swamy Temple, Draksharamam
The Bhimeswara Swamy Temple at Draksharamam is among the celebrated Pancharama Kshetras dedicated to Lord Shiva. Built between 892 and 922 CE by Eastern Chalukya ruler Chalukya Bhima I, the temple later received additions and renovations under the Musunuri Nayaks.

Its impressive architecture and long religious history have made it one of Andhra Pradesh’s most prominent Shaivite centres.

Connection to Telangana: The temple is traditionally regarded as the eastern boundary marker of the ancient Trilinga region.

What makes it special: The shrine is known for its towering structure and a remarkable 14-foot-high Spatika Linga.

Location: Draksharamam, East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh.

Together, these three Shiva temples form the spiritual foundation of the Trilinga Desam tradition, believed to have inspired the name Telangana. Visiting them offers not only a pilgrimage experience but also a deeper understanding of the history, culture and faith that helped shape the region’s identity.
