New Delhi: Rohit Sharma will have a long break following Mumbai Indians’ (MI) early exit from IPL 2026. The five-time IPL Champions only managed 4 wins in the season and finished in the ninth spot in the table. MI secured 8 points.
They didn’t manage two back-to-back wins in the season. After the end of MI’s campaign, the fans are eagerly waiting to know Rohit’s comeback date. The Indian legend won’t stay away from the field for long and will be in action in the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan. The three ODIs are scheduled to be played on June 14, 17 and 20.
However, Rohit has been asked to prove his fitness before the series. He suffered a hamstring injury against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and made his return a couple of weeks later.
Rohit played as an Impact Player after returning to the field. Hence, the BCCI has asked him to clear the test. MI captain Hardik Pandya will also have to pass the fitness test.
Rohit is now only active in ODI cricket. After the three ODIs against Afghanistan, Rohit will be in action in England. The two teams will lock horns in 5 T20Is and 3 ODIs. The 50-over matches will be played on July 14, 16 and 19.
After the England series, India will play their next ODI in September-October against West Indies. He could also play a few domestic matches. As of now, Rohit looks set to be part of Team India’s 2027 ODI World Cup squad.
Rohit was sacked as ODI captain
Rohit Sharma was shockingly sacked as India’s ODI captain before the Australia tour in 2025. He had captained the Men in Blue to a title win in the 2025 Champions Trophy in March and looked set to lead the team till the ODI WC.
But the Ajit Agarkar-headed selection committee made the shocking call to sack him. They handed over the charge to Shubman Gill. Gill was dropped from the T20I team for the 2026 World Cup.
