New Delhi: Amid growing discussions around examination reforms after repeated paper leak controversies, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced today that the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) will be conducted in a fully computer-based test (CBT) mode from next year. Experts believe that shifting NEET to a computer-based test system could improve transparency, security and efficiency in the exam process.

Unlike traditional pen-and-paper exams, a CBT mode exam is conducted on computers at designated centres where students answer questions digitally.

What is CBT exam?
In simple terms, a CBT test is an online exam conducted through a computer system instead of physical answer sheets. Candidates read questions on the screen and select answers using a mouse or keyboard. The CBT mode meaning refers to a digital examination format where questions are automatically managed by software systems. Several major competitive exams in India including JEE Main, banking and recruitment tests are already conducted in CBT mode.

For the NEET 2027 CBT mode exam candidates will have to appear for the exam in multiple sessions over several days instead of one single nationwide paper-based test.

How to practice questions for CBT mode exam?
Experts advise students to begin practising mock tests on computers well in advance. Since the CBT exam format is different from traditional written exams students should become comfortable reading lengthy questions on screens and managing time digitally.

Online mock tests, sample CBT mode papers and timer-based practice sessions can help students improve speed and confidence. Practising in a simulated exam environment is considered one of the best ways to prepare for a CBT test.

Can anyone cheat in CBT exams?
One major reason behind the push for NEET 2027 CBT is improved exam security. In a computer-based system, questions can be shuffled, delivered in different sets and monitored through secure servers.

Experts say large-scale paper leaks become much harder in CBT mode because there are no printed question papers transported physically across centres. Advanced monitoring systems, digital tracking and CCTV surveillance further reduce chances of malpractice.

Will the exam get submitted automatically?
In most CBT exams, answers are automatically saved during the test. Once the exam time ends, the system usually submits the paper automatically even if the student does not click the final submit button.

Benefits of CBT exams over traditional methods
Supporters of CBT mode believe the system offers several advantages including faster result processing, better transparency, reduced paper handling and improved security. The digital format also reduces logistical challenges involved in transporting and storing question papers.

With the NEET 2027 exam to be held on online mode, many education experts believe that adopting this exam model could become a major step toward restoring trust in India’s competitive exam system.
