New Delhi: Pravesh Wahi, the BJP candidate, has become the new Delhi Mayor. He defeated Congress candidate Mohammad Zarif. A total of 165 votes were cast in the mayoral election. The Bharatiya Janata Party candidate received 156 votes, accounting for 95%. The Congress candidate secured 9 votes.
Sources said Wahi was elected Delhi Mayor after securing 156 out of 165 votes. In the MCD House, slogans of “Jai Shri Ram” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” were raised as Pravesh Wahi became mayor.
Who is Pravesh Wahi?
Wahi hails from the Khatri Punjabi community, with his family having migrated from Rawalpindi. He studied at an MCD primary school in Old Delhi and has been associated with the RSS since his early teens.
He later served as an area representative of the Vishva Hindu Parishad in 1990 and went on to become a district president in 1998. In 2002, he joined BJP Yuva Morcha and held several organisational posts before foraying into electoral politics. In 2007, Wahi was first elected councillor from Rohini, and later Naharpur. He served a second term from 2012 to 2017.
During his tenure, he assumed several key roles, including serving as chairman of the Rohini zonal committee from 2010 to 2012 and as chairman of the standing committee in the erstwhile North Corporation between 2016 and 2017.
AAP did not contest
It may be noted that the Aam Aadmi Party decided not to contest the election this time, leaving a direct contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress.
The BJP fielded Rohini E ward councillor Pravesh Wahi for the post of Mayor and Monika Pant for Deputy Mayor. The Congress, on the other hand, nominated Mohammad Zarif for Mayor and Rajesh Kumar Gupta for Deputy Mayor.
Interestingly, the Indraprastha Vikas Party has not fielded any candidate in this election. All MPs and MLAs cast their votes, and councillors also participated in the voting process.
