What happens if you do not file a revised ITR after your refund is put on hold

New Delhi : Thousands of taxpayers have recently received messages from the Income Tax Department saying their income tax refund has been “put on hold” under the department’s risk management process.

In many cases, these communications ask taxpayers to revise their return or respond to discrepancies identified during processing. For many taxpayers, the immediate concern is simple: what happens if no action is taken.

REFUND WILL NOT BE RELEASED AUTOMATICALLY
When a return is flagged under the risk management framework, the refund does not move forward on its own. If a taxpayer does not revise the return or respond to the issue flagged, the refund can remain on hold indefinitely, even if the claim is otherwise genuine.

RETURN MAY BE PROCESSED WITHOUT YOUR INPUT
If the taxpayer does not respond within the specified timeframe, the department may proceed to process the return based on the information available with it. This can lead to the refund being reduced, adjusted against existing or future tax dues, or converted into a tax demand.

Once the department completes processing in this manner, reversing or correcting the outcome usually requires additional filings and follow-up, making the process more time-consuming.

RISK OF INTEREST, DEMAND OR FURTHER ACTION
In cases where the discrepancy involves underreported income or incorrect claims, ignoring the issue can result in additional tax liability along with interest. While penalties are not automatic in every case, failing to respond weakens the taxpayer’s position if the matter escalates.

A return flagged under risk management is already under closer review, and non-compliance increases the chances of further verification or scrutiny down the line.

EVEN MINOR ERRORS CAN BLOCK REFUNDS
In many cases, the trigger for a refund hold is relatively small, such as a mismatch in income figures, TDS credits or deduction claims. Tax experts note that these issues are best corrected through a revised return, which replaces the original filing and allows processing to resume smoothly.

Leaving even minor mismatches unresolved can result in prolonged delays and repeated follow-ups.

IS A REVISED RETURN ALWAYS REQUIRED
A revised return is not mandatory in every case. Sometimes, the department only requires an online response or clarification. However, if the communication clearly asks for a revised return and the taxpayer does not file one within the permitted time, the refund is unlikely to be released.

Taxpayers should therefore log in to the income tax portal and carefully read the communication issued by the Income Tax Department to understand what action is required.

If your refund has been put on hold, doing nothing is rarely the right choice. A timely response or revised filing can speed up the refund process and reduce the risk of additional tax issues later.

In practical terms, addressing the issue early is far easier than dealing with delays, demands or scrutiny after the department has already closed processing.
