Delhi woman says Bengaluru

New Delhi : A Delhi woman’s bold suggestion that Bengaluru should replace Delhi as India’s national capital has sparked a heated debate online, reopening conversations around air quality, safety, and urban infrastructure in Indian cities.

Simridhi Makhija, who recently moved from Delhi to Bengaluru, shared a video on Instagram arguing that the southern city offers a better quality of life and deserves national capital status. The video went viral quickly, drawing strong reactions from users across the country. Makhija, who has spent over two months in Bengaluru, said her perspective became sharper after a recent visit back home to Delhi to meet her parents.

Calling herself a “Delhi girl” in the caption, Makhija said the contrast between the two cities felt stark. One of her primary concerns was air quality. She pointed out that Delhi’s pollution levels, especially in recent weeks, made everyday life uncomfortable. Describing her experience bluntly, she said being in Delhi felt like “being in a gas chamber” and questioned why the capital continues to struggle with such severe environmental conditions.

Safety was another major factor she highlighted. According to Makhija, Bengaluru felt noticeably safer for women, even at night. She said she felt comfortable walking alone at around 10 pm after meeting a friend, adding that women’s safety did not feel like a constant concern in the city. This, she implied, played a significant role in her growing preference for Bengaluru.

Makhija also spoke about infrastructure and urban design, arguing that Bengaluru’s roads and public spaces are more pedestrian-friendly. She questioned why international visitors to India should be exposed to polluted air, congested roads and poorly walkable spaces, suggesting that a city with better living conditions would make for a stronger global impression.

The video triggered mixed reactions online. While some users agreed with her assessment and echoed concerns about Delhi’s pollution and safety issues, others pushed back, arguing that Bengaluru has its own challenges, including traffic congestion, water shortages and infrastructure strain. Several users also pointed out that being a national capital involves political, historical and administrative considerations beyond quality-of-life metrics.

Despite the divided response, Makhija’s video has succeeded in reigniting a larger conversation about what Indian cities need to prioritise to become healthier, safer and more inclusive places to live.
