New Delhi : A chapter in one of Kerala’s most high-profile and protracted legal dramas drew to a close today as the Ernakulam District and Sessions Court, presided over by Judge Honey Varghese, acquitted Malayalam superstar Dileep, the eighth accused in the 2017 actress assault case.
The court found the prosecution had failed to prove the charge of criminal conspiracy, while simultaneously finding the first six accused guilty of the abduction and sexual assault of a fellow actress in a moving vehicle in February 2017. Minutes after walking out of the court, a visibly defiant Dileep launched a fierce attack, squarely blaming his former wife, acclaimed actor Manju Warrier, and the investigating officers for what he termed a near-decade-long conspiracy against him.
“If there was any criminal conspiracy at all, it was against me,” Dileep declared to a throng of reporters outside the court premises. He positioned himself not as a suspected mastermind, but as the primary victim of a fabricated narrative. His most pointed accusation was reserved for Manju Warrier. “It was Manju Warrier who first suggested that there was a criminal conspiracy in the case.
That was when the conspiracy against me began,” he claimed. He alleged that the police, in collusion with the prime accused, Pulsar Suni, and certain media outlets, concocted a false story that unraveled in court. “My image in society and my life itself was ruined,” he stated, while extending gratitude to his family, legal team, and supporters.

At a solidarity gathering of film artists at Durbar Hall Ground on February 19, 2017, Manju Warrier took the stage. In a speech reported by media like Reporter TV, she asserted, “What happened here is a criminal conspiracy.” This public articulation of a hidden plot marked a turning point, moving the discourse from a lone atrocity to a potentially premeditated crime with broader implications.
On June 21, 2017, she provided a crucial statement to the police, relaying the survivor’s disclosure about a strained relationship between Dileep and the survivor, which allegedly stemmed from the survivor’s knowledge of Dileep’s relationship with actress Kavya Madhavan, according to a report in The Times of India.
This testimony, along with other evidence, was key in the prosecution’s decision to name Dileep as the alleged conspirator. Throughout the trial, which stretched over nearly eight years, Manju Warrier remained a steadfast witness. Unlike some who retracted statements, she never altered her testimony, cooperating with further investigations in 2022 and 2023 by identifying audio evidence and confirming digital materials.
