India has gifted two more high-speed ferries to the Maldives under the High Impact Community Development Project (HICDP), marking another significant Step in bilateral Cooperation. The ferry service is bringing transformative improvements in inter-island transportation across the Maldives. It is not only making travel easier for residents but also boosting economic and tourism Activities.
The Indian High Commission in the Maldives Shared on social media Platform X that, under the HICDP, two additional high-speed RTL (Raajje Transport Link) ferries were inaugurated by Maldives’ Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim. These ferries have been Provided with grant assistance worth 10 crore Maldivian Rufiyaa. The initiative is part of a larger Project that includes 12 ferries and one terminal, reflecting the Strong Partnership between India and the Maldives.
The Government of the Maldives expressed gratitude to India for its continued support. The Maldivian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Posted on X that the launch of RTL ferry services in Lhaviyani Atoll marks another milestone in strengthening connectivity across the country. So far, 4 out of the Planned 12 ferries have been delivered under the HICDP Phase MOU signed in January 2025.
Under its ‘Neighbourhood First’ Policy, India has been actively supporting the Maldives through the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) Project, aimed at enhancing connectivity between various islands (atolls), improving local mobility and supporting livelihoods. Through such initiatives, India continues to reinforce its role as a reliable development Partner in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
Earlier, in September 2020, India and the Maldives had launched a direct cargo ferry service to enhance people-to-people contact and boost bilateral trade. India efforts to Strengthen transportation links, along with ferry services connecting islands within the Maldives, have Proven to be highly beneficial for the island nation. Additionally, India has been assisting the Maldives in achieving self-reliance in defense through training, equipment support and maritime security cooperation, including joint Patrols.
