NEW DELHI : Crispy chips, cold drinks, samosas, burgers and chocolates are common favourites among schoolchildren, with many students heading to canteens and shops near their schools as soon as classes end. But this could change if a new proposal aimed at curbing unhealthy food consumption around schools comes into effect.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is considering restrictions on the sale of foods high in fat, sugar and salt (HFSS) within 50 metres of schools. The proposal is aimed at limiting children’s easy access to unhealthy food and encouraging healthier eating habits.

The proposed restrictions could cover shops, food carts and other outlets selling HFSS products near schools. According to the proposal, products such as chips, sugary beverages, chocolates and other high-fat or high-sugar foods could come under the restrictions, while shops would continue to be allowed to sell non-HFSS alternatives.

The move comes amid growing concerns over childhood overweight and obesity in India. According to data cited from the World Obesity Federation, the number of children aged 5 to 19 who were overweight or obese in India increased from around 2.8 crore in 2015 to 4.1 crore in 2025. The figure is projected to rise further to around 5.6 crore by 2040.

The increasing availability of inexpensive packaged and fast foods has also contributed to concerns about children’s dietary habits. Attractive advertising, low prices and easy availability have made products such as packaged snacks, chocolates and sugary drinks popular among young consumers.

FSSAI Chief Executive Rajit Punhani has said the objective of the proposed measures is to promote healthier eating habits among children. The restrictions could also encourage food manufacturers to reconsider the composition of products sold around educational institutions.

The proposal could have implications for both small retailers and large food and beverage companies, particularly those whose products are commonly sold near schools. Local vendors may have to adjust their product offerings if the restrictions are implemented.

The proposal is part of a wider effort to create healthier food environments for children. Similar restrictions on the availability and marketing of unhealthy foods around schools have also been introduced in some other countries, including Chile.

If implemented, the proposed 50-metre restriction would represent a significant shift in how India regulates children’s access to HFSS foods in and around educational institutions. The focus, however, would extend beyond restricting sales, with schools, parents, food companies and local vendors all playing a role in shaping children’s eating habits.
