NEW DELHI : Handwriting may do more than put words on paper. A 2024 study has found that writing by hand creates broader patterns of brain connectivity than typing, suggesting that the traditional way of taking notes may engage neural networks involved in learning and memory more actively.
The study, published in Frontiers in Psychology, was conducted by researchers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). The team examined brain activity in 36 university students as they wrote words using a digital pen and typed comparable information on a keyboard.
The researchers used a high-density electroencephalography, or EEG, system equipped with 256 sensors to track activity across the brain. Their findings showed that handwriting generated more widespread communication between brain regions involved in movement, vision and sensory processing. These included areas in the central and parietal regions.
Handwriting and brain activity
The researchers found that handwriting was associated with connectivity at theta and alpha frequencies. Earlier research has linked activity in these frequency ranges with memory formation and the processing of newly acquired information.
One possible explanation is the physical complexity involved in writing. When a person forms a letter by hand, the brain must coordinate finger movements, monitor the movement of the hand and compare the resulting mark with the letter or word being produced.
Typing requires a different type of motor action. Instead of physically forming each character, users press keys to produce letters. Although skilled typing also demands attention and coordination, the researchers noted that its movements are generally more repetitive.
A broader 2025 review titled The Neuroscience Behind Writing: Handwriting vs. Typing-Who Wins the Battle? similarly reported that handwriting activates a wider network associated with motor, sensory and cognitive processing, while typing tends to involve fewer of these neural circuits.
Why handwritten notes may support learning
The possible learning advantage of handwriting may not come from brain activity alone. The slower pace of writing can also change how students process information.
Most people cannot write as quickly as a lecturer speaks. Students taking handwritten notes therefore have to decide what information matters most. Instead of reproducing every sentence, they may record keywords, shorten explanations, draw arrows or add brief comments.
Typing, by contrast, makes it easier to record information almost word for word. That can be useful when accuracy and speed are important, but it may reduce the need to decide what information is important while taking notes.
Research discussed by NPR has also highlighted the slower and more active nature of handwriting as one possible reason it may support learning. Neuroscientists have suggested that physically producing letters could create additional connections between visual, auditory, motor and cognitive processing.
Does typing affect learning?
The findings do not mean that typing is harmful or that keyboards should be abandoned. Digital writing remains more practical for many everyday activities, including preparing lengthy documents, communicating quickly and handling large volumes of information.
The NTNU researchers also recognised the importance of technology and suggested that the most suitable method depends on the task. Their findings instead indicate that handwriting continues to have a distinct role in learning and should not be discarded simply because digital devices are now widely used.
There is also a limitation to the 2024 study. A 2025 commentary published in Frontiers in Psychology questioned aspects of the research design, including the typing condition. Participants used only their right index finger when typing, rather than the multiple fingers and both hands typically used during normal touch typing. The commentary suggested that this difference could influence how the results are interpreted.
As a result, the research does not establish that handwriting will always lead to better memory than typing. It does, however, indicate that the two activities engage the brain differently.
For students, the findings offer a reason to retain at least some handwritten note-taking alongside digital study methods. Writing by hand combines movement, touch, vision and mental processing, potentially giving newly learned information several pathways through which it can be encoded and recalled. In an increasingly digital classroom, the notebook may still have a useful place.
