New Delhi: Abhijit Majumdar, the Assam chief of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), resigned from the party on Friday, accusing it of functioning only for the Muslim community in both Assam and West Bengal. His exit added to the growing string of resignations that have hit the Mamata Banerjee-led party after its crushing defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.

Majumdar sent his resignation letter to Mamata Banerjee via email. In his letter, he alleged that the party’s image in Assam had increasingly become that of an “organisation working solely for Muslims”. He further claimed that the same approach was visible in West Bengal as well.

Stating that he could no longer continue under such circumstances, Majumdar said the party’s functioning and political direction had made it impossible for him to remain associated with it.

His resignation came amid visible unrest within the Trinamool Congress following a series of high-profile exits and internal disagreements after the Assembly poll debacle.

Weeks earlier, senior TMC leader and former Rajya Sabha MP Santanu Sen had resigned as the party’s national spokesperson, citing corruption allegations and the handling of the RG Kar rape-murder case among the reasons for stepping down.

In his resignation letter to Mamata Banerjee, Sen said he was unable to defend the party over what he described as “immoral acts” and corruption-related controversies.

He referred to issues including the RG Kar rape-murder case, the Abhaya case and the alleged cash-for-jobs scam. Sen also said he was stepping down while respecting the mandate delivered by voters in the recently concluded Assembly elections.

“Even though I did not agree with views during various difficult times, I fought publicly for the party in the media on many controversial issues. But in the current situation, when the people of Bengal have rejected us for various immoral acts and corruption, my mind no longer agrees to support them as a spokesperson,” Sen wrote.

Even TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar resigned as chief of the party’s women’s wing and stepped down from several organisational posts. In her letter, Dastidar alleged that the party had failed to protect her from alleged misconduct and verbal abuse by a fellow MP, an apparent reference to senior TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee.

The resignations have exposed widening cracks inside the Trinamool Congress following its heavy defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. The Bharatiya Janata Party swept the polls by winning record 207 of the 293 declared seats on May 4, bringing an end to the TMC’s long-standing rule in the state.

The BJP later tightened its grip further by securing victory in the Falta Assembly constituency during the repoll held on May 21, piling additional pressure on the Mamata Banerjee-led party as dissent within its ranks continues to grow.
